This wine was over the hill. Sherry overtones were taking over the nice apricot/peach taste that made this so enticing. This one went down the kitchen sink. I still have more of this so I hope this was an isolated event, but I think not.

One more cork curse....I may have broken 1 or 2 corkpulls, not broken yet, but clearly damaged, but the wine was as described below with much richness and complexity. Basically dripped/poured it into a decanter through a strainer to remove cork fragments resulting from drilling through....lovely wine...horrific corks

OK. Have to start with the cork. WTF!! It wasn't budging as if glued to the bottle. A frustrating half an hour later the wine was slowly dripping and thank God it was worth the effort. Bright peach color. Expressive nose of glycerine, peaches and spices. Medium bodied. Nice acidity. Very rich - really reminds me of a Northern Rhone white. Feels like there is some wood on the palate. Citrus, spices, exotic fruits (pineapple and mango?). Medium finish. The richness and balance here are nice. I like it, but I will never buy another bottle because of the horrible experience of actually opening it.

Similar to the last one, including the cork problem...I really like maturity but Sue less convinced...definitely reminds me some of aged white burgundy

Also had problem removing cork, but it was worth it. This is nectar. Rich, fruity (it has an apricot thing going on) and the wine kept building over the time we drank it. Don't be fooled by the sherry like quality I think it has some life in it, but I would drink now. Wholesaler did a closeout on it so there might be some great deals on this baby.

Nightmare removing the cork but the wine was terrific...deep golden yellow and rich nutty flavors with still just enough sweetness and fruit...really delightful wine on a winter's night

Burnished amber gold. Muted yet oxidized nose isn't the best setup for more pleasing and expressive flavors of apricot and coriander. Long but not necessarily noble; call me unconvinced.

Wonderful bottle, tremendously enjoyed by JG. Pronounced nose of apricot, tropical fruit. Thick, round, full, long, apricot on the palate. Really special. On the level of an expensive burgundy.

Wasn't really sure what to expect. Deep yellow colour and looked oxidised. Initially tasted very rich and oxidised too, almost like a white burgundy weight so opened a different wine up. Tried it again the next day and what a difference: mineral, limited fruit but with no sign of oxidation. Great structure and a fantastic food wine. One to decant?

Bright golden yellow, rapeseed oil colour. Floral and mineral nose hinting of ripe fruit. Sweet, ripe fruit on attack, melon, some lychee, tropical fruit, then mineral core with dry finish. Complex. Rounded. Waxy, viscous feel. Really very nice indeed. Would be good with food along the lines of a Alsace Pinot Gris, but works very well as a moreish aperitif. Ripe, rich and opulent with a ineral core and long, dryish finish. ****

Catching Up: Couple of Dinners Out; 4/9/2006-4/15/2006 (Around Tokyo): A bit darker gold than the Calvarino. Rich and round on the nose with a deep floral element, a hint of tropical fruit, and just a kiss of oak sweetness. When it hits the palate, there is a much more forceful minerality and a roundness and fullness that goes beautifully with the kinmedai preparation. It still shows that typical pear and citrus fruit and has a certain freshness to it, but it wears its oak as an evidently suave cloak. In most years, I prefer the Calvarino, but in 2003 the La Rocca finds a vintage that plays up its strong points. It’s still garganega from Pieropan so even with the ripeness and the bit of oak, it is lengths ahead of most of its peers. But I wouldn’t drink it when I’m looking for traditional Soave freshness and cut.
