  • This wine was over the hill. Sherry overtones were taking over the nice apricot/peach taste that made this so enticing. This one went down the kitchen sink. I still have more of this so I hope this was an isolated event, but I think not.

  • One more cork curse....I may have broken 1 or 2 corkpulls, not broken yet, but clearly damaged, but the wine was as described below with much richness and complexity. Basically dripped/poured it into a decanter through a strainer to remove cork fragments resulting from drilling through....lovely wine...horrific corks

  • OK. Have to start with the cork. WTF!! It wasn't budging as if glued to the bottle. A frustrating half an hour later the wine was slowly dripping and thank God it was worth the effort. Bright peach color. Expressive nose of glycerine, peaches and spices. Medium bodied. Nice acidity. Very rich - really reminds me of a Northern Rhone white. Feels like there is some wood on the palate. Citrus, spices, exotic fruits (pineapple and mango?). Medium finish. The richness and balance here are nice. I like it, but I will never buy another bottle because of the horrible experience of actually opening it.

  • Similar to the last one, including the cork problem...I really like maturity but Sue less convinced...definitely reminds me some of aged white burgundy

  • Also had problem removing cork, but it was worth it. This is nectar. Rich, fruity (it has an apricot thing going on) and the wine kept building over the time we drank it. Don't be fooled by the sherry like quality I think it has some life in it, but I would drink now. Wholesaler did a closeout on it so there might be some great deals on this baby.

(LA ROCCA Pieropan) UPDATE: Speaker's Corner Lyle Fass goes live again with a new editorial that is certainly thought provoking. Get in on the live discussion here: http://www.garagistewine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6730 <http://www.garagistewine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6730> ******************* Pieropan Dear Friends, Not sure how I can follow-up yesterday's Galardi offer but I'll try (the response even surprised me - yikes). We must forge ahead so a duo of world-class white wine seemed appropriate... Here are two examples from Pieropan, a white wine specialist in the Veneto that deserves far more attention in the US. Both of these are impeccably made with contrasting styles. The Calvarino is for classicists and the La Rocca is for those seeking more weight but the regal tone of Chassagne. Both are educational as well as very fairly priced - both are made from indigenous varietals: 2001 Pieropan Soave Classico Superiore "Calvarino" An experiment in ageing, both the Calvarino and La Rocca are known to evolve for a number years (although many tasters are fooled into thinking they are early drinkers). This wine should be at or near peak right now and it's a steal of a deal. 2003 Pieropan Soave Classico Superiore "La Rocca" This wine has never really taken hold in the US but it is thought of with the highest regard in Italy and Europe. The 2003 vintage played right into the hands of the rich style of La Rocca with vines so old the rootstock already had ample depth to cool the resulting extract. This will be very interesting to watch develop and it's also near peak - an exceptional example for the style at a price that is eye-opening to say the least: Both are EXTREMELY LIMITED at this price - about the same as in Verona Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy7055 Italy7066
