ridgewine.com: The first zinfandel was made in 1964, from a small nineteenth-century vineyard on Monte Bello ridge. Since this time, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking. The harvest date for the Carmichael was the 26th of september, thirteen months barrel-aging in 100% air-dried american oak (15 % new, 85% two to four years old). This is the sixth release from the ranch and only 45 barrels produced.

Opaque dark burgundy. Nose richly fruited, hint of marzipan, some sweetness. Palate at first dominated by a buttery flavor, as it airs out the dense fruit becomes more defined and shaped by acidity and a herbal complexity, some black cherry notes with time. Possibly past peak but still offering a lot of fruity pleasure, a bit decadent like it let itself go but still has that classical structure, like watching Marlon Brando in The Godfather. 91 pts

At home with Valerie, Meredith and Eileen. Last bottle of this stash, drank after a nice Bordeaux to mix it up.
Color still a young maroon/purple. Wine is holding up well. Picked up the dark fruits, jam, oak/vanilla on the nose along with a burnt sugar, caramel note. Texture is noteable in this wine, smooth and creamy. Palate of ripe blackberry, spice, cedar, tea and blueberry. Medium finish.
Great wine, really flavorful and terrific pairing with anything off the grill. Ridge Zins do not dissapoint

Crimson color with appealing ripe mixed black and red fruits, spice, bramble and a hint of leather aromas. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with soft well integrated sweet tannins, , very good acidity and plum, blackberry, black cherry, and spice finish and a lingering satisfying finish.

With left-over Orzo-Ricotta meatballs and marinara sauce. Pretty crimson, clear, clean, not quite opaque. Nose shows pepper, dried fruit (perhaps blackberry). Palate is following the nose, with added touch of anise. Good balance, clean, a bit spicy underneath the pepper (clove?), some power to this one but not over-powering. Better than the Rocca with the meatballs - worked very well with the food. Hit this one at its peak.

Smooth comes to mind, easy drinker. This is the bottle you bring to the party full of non-wine drinkers and listen to everyone say it's the best bottle of Zinfandel they've ever had. And while it does have good fruit and a beautiful nose, it lacks the complexity and stuffing of the Geyserville. At its peak, drink up now.

Like my last bottle, this wine has a maroon color going to a slightly orange rim. Again it has this great blackberry nose. On the palate there are blackberries, blueberries, bramble, cedar and saddle leather. Nice wine, but the low acidity means to me that any remaining bottles should be consumed soon.

A more refined style of Zinfandel, which I quite like. Plenty of classic notes still with cedar, leather, sweet dark fruits and toasted oak. Juicy with a fine balance between acidity and the underlying power of the fruit. Long aftertaste. A very harmonious wine with a cooler interpretation of Zinfandel.

At home tonight, bought this one from the vineyard touring Sonoma with Tom and Susan.
Clear purple/maroon color. Smooth Texture, almost creamy in mouthfeel. Has some bite when first opened but settled down in 15 minutes. Nose of jam, bacon, strawberry, red fruits. Palate similar to nose, getting some light cedar, tea and blueberry. Medium finish.
Ridge Zinfandels are always interesting and diverse, IMO. Very pleasant wine, seems to be in its zone now. We drank without food, would pair well with a a good range, thinking grilled salmon or skirt steak - Will experiment with remaining bottles. Drink over next few years, probably won't improve much.

Remarkably well-integrated and elegant for so young a zinfandel. Less pepper and dark fruit than typical; there's plum, leather, nutmeg and a little smoked game in the nose. Slightly sweet blueberry fruit up front, with a balanced, moderately tannic finish (that turns to lightly tannic with some time to breathe). Definitely give this some time to open up, as it's more than a bit rough straight out of the bottle, but with some time to breathe it's an enjoyable change of pace from the typical Ridge zin.

The aromas of blueberry and spice just burst from the glass, especially as the bottle was open for a while. The tannins are almost non-existent or at least not perceptible. The blueberry and raspberry flavors hit in the back of the throat, leaving a long impression, with the blueberry on top of the raspberry, if that makes any sense. There is a hint of cumin too that adds to the complexity.
We lingered over the bottle, which was served with simple cheese quesadilllas and black beans, leaving a glass for later today. A delicious wine that is drinking great now, we couldn't stop talking about and analyzing this. I won't hold my other bottle for more than a year or two.
