I get the Malbec plumminess, but not the jamminess. I get some cocoa powder and Indian curry spices, alolng with graphite, tobacco, and herbs. There’s some lilac and sandalwood notes too. I think this bottle is a bit flawed. I get too much VA and some old wet t-shirt as well. The flavors seem muted. It came more alive after a few hours of air, but this felt too rustic for what this is supposed to be (new world and all new French oak, etc.). If it were Cahors, it could be right on. I don’t know what to think. I’ll have to give Achaval Ferrer another shot sometime.

my favorite but groups least favorite at Vinetaster perhaps surprised by the difficult cork then initial bitterness but 5 hours later terrific for me; earthy elegance with depth and mystery I have 2 more bottles and would open these sooner than later

This is drinking nicely tonight. Color and nose are youthful, but the palate is maturing. Still has primary fruit but the tannins are totally integrated and fine. Was amazing with venison and stumped the entire table (served blind)

Fine Wines SG - BYOB “COPA Wine-Mé-Ca” (Praelum Wine Bistro): Has great ripe blackberry and plums, black tar and liquorice, and also a funky sense of blue cheese. Great intensity, and big tannic structure. And what a finish! Felt like a constant line of fruits, blackness and funk. Fabulous!

After almost 10 years it is still showing a beautiful pristine ruby inking the glass. Layers of spice with aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate and espresso-tobacco. Displaying a savory character with graphite, leather and pepper. Herbs and spices add personality. Finishes with chewy elegant tannins. I am sure it could age well for at least more 5 years.

A crowd pleaser with sweet and slightly jammy (not in a bad way) red fruit, well integrated silky tannins, medium- acidity to keep it fresh enough. Seems to be in a good drinking window (we did not decant it). I did not like some milky texture I've experienced before in some Malbecs but overall a solid wine with enough depth and power to live up to its merits.

By looking at other comments, it's clear that this wine needs cellaring. I should have decanted, but I didn't and found considerabel sediment in the 8 year old wine. Very nice on the palet, and long finish.

decanted for one hour. Wine is still very young. It has a very smooth taste and pleasant mouth feel.
The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like toast and forest floor. It tastes like red currant. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

This was a poor wine at almost any price point and a particularly poor value where it is. Unripe and acidic. How this wine was rated by WA as a 96 I will never know.

Achaval Ferrer Tasting at K&L Wine Merchants (K&L Wine Merchants(Redwood City, CA)): Inky opaque purple color with aromatic, pretty aromas of dark fruit, violet, and dark chocolate. On the palate full-bodied , complex, refined yet intense, round, and smooth with black cherry, cassis, mineral, and spice flavors. Long finish. Would have definitely benefit from more aeration. Sourced from a single vineyard planted at 2400 ft. in 1921.

Good wine. Elegant. Good concentration of fruit, without being cloying. Lack complexity.

Not ready to drink. I preferred a much cheaper ripe Malbec. Would suggest a couple more years.
