I had mixed feeling here. There is a lot of intensity, lot of depth and impressive delineation. But this young, this is just too dense, too intense to be truly enjoyed. One downside is, that I clearly had alcohol heat on the nose (it could not hide the 14% alcohol that well).
Decanting: I would not open this right now, better to wait a decade. If opened now I would give it two hours in the decanter.

This was a good study in that the 2016s need air. At first a bit muted, quite medicinal and that balanced, this opened up more and more, became more harmonious, refined with the fruit becoming brighter and delicate floral notes coming forward. Very promising but needs time and air. 93+pts
TN: Very intense bouquet with tons of dark cherries, smoke, stems, some menthol. Intriguing but intense and quite ripe nose. On the palate there is a lot of menthol, some medicinal notes, ripe cherries, some smoke and stems atound the red fruit core. Gets rounder and softer with the fruit coming out more and more the longer it sits in the glass. Last sip was best with exploding red berries and floral fruits towards the finish. Lots of finesse and good freshness, airy texture, good balance (with time).
Decanting: At least an hour in a decanter is advised.

At the top level, the 2014s are not ready to drink and this Chevy from Leflaive was another reminder of that. At first closed, it only slightly opened up with time, showing promising complexity and precision, but it yet has to fill out and gain that oomph factor.
TN: At first muted nose, with time a subtle bouquet full of citrus and sea shell minerality. On the palate more concentration, full of fine citrus, some floral notes, minerality and a beauitful salinity. Got better and better and the last sips were quite good to but likely displaying only a fraction of what it has in store in the future.
Decanting: This needed a good hour in the decanter to open up.

4/21/2024 11:39:00 AM - Hello Cailles, this is Bandreas from the Cellartracker. we exchanged some comments in the past.
I recently moved to Zurich; maybe we can get together some time this summer to exchange experiences and taste some wine together.
My E-mail is Bernd.Andreas@hotmail.de
Looking forward to hopefully meeting you.
Cheers

7/22/2020 9:32:00 AM - Super notes on your Bordeaux Magnums tasting....but how come the organiser didn't know to decant many of these for several hours? It seems almost incompetent when treating wines of this calibre (and expense).
For example, I am a big 1959 Bordeaux fan but even a 750ml bottle of a top growth needs a 6-8 hour decant in my experience.
8/13/2019 6:54:00 AM - Was reading your TN’s. Read your comment “TN: Nosegasm! Wonderfully intense, precise, elegant and light nose displaying loads of matchsticks...” Funny as our wine group came up with the term Double O or oral org... when a wine was just spectacular. (Note: I have been tasting wine for over 45 years. Yup-that means I am no spring chicken) Have not had to many Double O’s but wine like the 1959 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild sure did. Dave
5/23/2019 8:12:00 PM - Hey Cailles, reading a lot of great reviews about 2018 BDXs. Are you going to purchase any futures? I usually buy Clinet as it is consistently good and well priced. Anyway, let me know what your thoughts are via CellarTracker or at john@johndunlap.org. Cheers, John
12/19/2018 1:59:00 AM - Good to be fans, Cailles. Ah, Zurich. We visited two times this year. Sadly, we missed you. Caduff's and Napa Grille is a very, very nice way to sniff 'n sip some jolly good Cali Cabs!
