Restaurant note- PNP Barnyard that mostly blew off with air, sweet sous bois, wood spice, good minerality, blackberry, beef blood, black pepper. Very fresh and not flabby.

this was not decanted and I fear it suffered for it - quite closed and only the last mouthful offered anything - I would be inclined to leave this for a few years yet

Pale-Medium ruby garnet, minerals, black fruit, blackberry tobacco earthy leather tobacco, on the palategreat balance, still fruit forward but nicely balanced. Great wine

Fascinating nose of smoked meats and leathery funk, which was described as bacon by my friend. Definitely needs decanting - it kicked off with a heavy dark, bitter, leathery start. But boy, when the dark fruits opened up, the complexity was a force. Tasted bitter coffee and animal, with slight smokiness and iron. Broody. Enjoyable now and for many years more.

Wow, much better than the 2001 Ermite I had 5 years ago, may be it was not ready then. Extremely complex nose of dark fruit with lots of leather, smoke, BBQ and barnyard scents. Medium-full bodied, good structure and freshness. World class Syrah and WOTN against a strong 2008 Rousseau Ruchottes.

this was OK, dark color and dense meaty nose, palate was similarly dense and brooding, thought there was acid there, and some nice dusty tannin, the palate was dull with meaty and heavy character, wasn't oaky and wasn't modern but somehow too heavy to enjoy, even w/out food

Robijnrood, nauwelijks verkleuring. In de geur gesteente, drop, leder, rundvlees, rokerig, paprika. Prachtige frisse zuren, rode en blauwe bessen en drop in de mond. Korrelige tannines, lang aanhoudend. Wat een elegante klasbak!

Hermitage at Grant's (West Hartford, CT): Shocker of the night (in a very good way). I was expecting something rather slick, fruit-driven and modern, more in line with the Le Pavillon, but the aromatics here are all leathery funk, forestal earth and smoked meats. There's plenty of ripe Syrah fruit here, but the other savoury and funky elements provide a nice counterpoint, and there's fantastic balance with a spine of bright acids and firm tannins. Very young, but nicely balanced now and I'd love to see how this will age.

Northern Rhone Dinner (Grants - Hartford, CT): Wonderfully meaty nose that had subtle coffee, earth, and animal hide mixed throughout. The nose continued to thrill me and developed tones of tobacco, olives, and balsamic before too long. Palate was equally as fascinating with distinct bacon notes intermixed with truffle, dark cherry, earth and a grainy tannin finish. Fantastic wine.

A seriously meaty wine with big underlying graphite/iron structure. There’s some dense dark fruits but also plenty of brett that strips the fruits sweeter aspects and attenuates the wine.

Drank off the list at Gordon Ramsay. Definitely a big wine. Dark, brooding fruit underneath a layer of dusty cocoa/coffee, streaks of licorice, plenty of backbone, and fairly intense tannins. Not my style, but I can see how this would appeal to a Francophile.

Bordeaux "en Primeur" Tasting and Rhone side visit; 3/29/2004-4/2/2004 (France): Tasting at winery. Massive black fruit aromas with great spice- cloves, black pepper, licorice. Ripe and forward fruit on palate with big blackberry and blueberry. Long evolving finish with lots of structure. Should be very exciting 2010-2030.

Quick visit to Rhone and Burgundy; 11/27/2003-12/2/2003 (France): Tasting at Chapoutier. All spice on the nose, then spice and minerals on the palate. This was popped and poured and the fruit seemed very inaccessible, but then showed lots of power and intensity on the finish. Incredible length, this is a long term ager with lots of structure. Interesting contrast to the more forward Pavillon.

Much more acidic than the last bottle, which was an outstanding showing. Great aromas of smoke, bbq meat but the palate a bit rustic.

Tasted blind. Floral nose, very rich fruit balanced by massive acidity. Very round and supple. Superb balance. Really great now.
