This was opened at 5pm and drank at about 8pm. Initially was subdued but an hour or so into the drinking window this started to open up more with a slightly medicinal but pleasant nose. Compared next to the bouchard reignots 02 the difference was down to a slightly more Oaked bouchard. The CLB was always lighter and more approchable. Shows how CLB has evolved the winemaking. I will always prefer the wines of today over these earlier bottles.

Drunk in a great flight with the 02 Meo Richebourg and 02 Leroy Brulees. This bottle was a bit of the straight laced adult in a flight of zany teenagers. Lovely, silky, classy.

Very flamboyant nose, super open, menthol, deep red and black fruit, rocking Vosne spice, though a bit brash and hinting at its massive weight and heat. Quite ripe on the palate indeed, slightly over for me with lots of sweetness to the fruit, though with nice earth and spice accents. There’s enough acidity to hold things together, and if you were to have one big glass of wine with dinner this would be a glorious one, however I couldn’t call it ethereal and would never choose it as a session wine. Gears down somewhat on the finish, with a bit of heat showing. Most definitely a big, expressive Burgundy, seemingly in the middle of its drink window. While I preferred the 07’ and 12’ the table may have liked this most.

Liger Belair Dinner: Extraordinary aromatic fireworks, so elegant and sexy, this is tough to describe without being salacious. Lush and gorgeous, voluptuous and serious, this is so very impressive. A reference standard wine from one of my favorite vineyards, thrilling.

Fantastic complex nose displaying crushed red fruits, strawberry, dried rose petals, spices, and earthy minerality.Red fruit driven palate with silky integrated tannins, bright acidity and a very long complex finish.Very nice effort for Louis Michel's first vintage.Drinking great,at its peak.

The style difference of pre 05 Liger is so different from where it is now. This wine is all structure, tannin, dark burly fruit opposed to the sweet bright red seamless fruit of current releases. It took about a hour in the decanter to crack its shell, it threw off some cedar and ripe stem and the fruit got softer, but never quite opened up. I'd hold.

This wine is why I love Burgundy. The nose displays deep dark and rich aromas of black fruit, leather, and barnyard, conveying a strong soil and minerality. in a word, beautiful. Complex tertiary flavors of red fruit, spices and mineral. Long and bright throughout the one minute flavors with a beautifully balanced acidity. I love Liger Belair for the austere approach and the always complex mineral notes. These wines ring my bell. Drink one now, but no where near decline. Enjoy.

Vosne Night (Tabard Inn): A definite step up from the '01 in the Bouchard wrapper, which is apparently a vintage thing as both wines were made by Liger-Belair, or so we understand. This is richer than the '01 yet seems even more elegant and rounded. There's a sweet kirsch-like fruit flavor at its core and a layer or two of something deeper and darker. And while this, like the '01, is still mostly about the fruit without exhibiting any of the more exotic flavors one might expect to find, it does still seem to exhibit certain aspects of the vineyard's personality, or at least what I'm coming to view as the vineyard's personality - that Richebourg-like opulence but with a more open-knit, less tensile presence.

Copain Dinner at Craft NYC (New York): Flinty with a bit of charcoal on the nose. Similar on palate with a lively juicy acidity. Very burgundy - balanced, a bit savory and stony on the palate. Nice wine but shows the least well of this flight, which WG agreed with.
