Dinner with the wine group (Zazie's, San Francisco): A bit réticent on the nose right now. Cherry, red fruited, some spice; palate is a bit short right now; short-medium finish. Needs air. 90 now. 1 hour air: nice spice, rich bodied for a burgundy, good complex flavors. Opening up nicely and would age longer, though this is my only bottle. 91

Classy feminine and pretty. Just what volnay should be. So floral, like a bouquet of roses or even a lighter softer red flower. Sweet fruit but not sweet on the palate. This is so nice right now but has 10 years. Some noted a leafy and almost green quality, but if it's there it's so faint and I wouldn't have even mentioned it.

This seems to be in a nice spot, though a few more years of cellaring would probably benefit. This shows ripe dark fruit with red toned underpinnings. Most notable is a gentle leafy (borderline stalky) note that comes on at entry and runs into the middle (see '2011 green meanies'). As the leafy note backs off, dark soil, smoke and charcoal tones are revealed, which mesh well with the ever-present dark cassis fruit. The leafy note may not be for everyone and I will admit that it was distracting at times, given its prominence. In time this may turn into a lovely fragrance. Structurally, the wine is very elegant, despite being full-bodied, and still has fine-grained tannins to resolve on the backend.
Very Good

This has something in reserve, but shows pure dark red pinot fruit cloaked in limestone, dark green herbs, and assertive but not unpleasant tannin. A classy pinot that wants a few more years to find its form.

Lovely perfumed nose. has lots of very pretty red fruits; gorgeous weight and velvety mouthfeel. Wonderful purity and elegance. Very feminine, classic Volnay. Complex. A superb 1er Cru. Long and complete. 92-95+
