The sun-kissed 1949 vintage created an Yquem of extraordinary concentration and sucrosity, yet there’s enough aromatic precision and acid that the wine is anything but fat. The nose offers pleasure enough with burnt orange rind, sea salt, crème caramel, sandalwood, and a hint of cooked shiitake, but on the palate the intensity and length of those elements really impresses. The finish lingers and lingers…

GJE CRD 2008 and EP 2011; 3/29/2012-4/4/2012 (Bordeaux, France): We, including myself, tend to equate the quality of a Sauternes vintage to that of the red Bordeaux’s which is a big mistake. Dry apricots, cinnamon and vanilla. Good clean silky palate and long finish. Very enjoyable but not a great D’Yquem.

Spring comes to Minneapolis.: I've had this a few times, and its a good but not great d'Yquem. Classic d'Yquem profile, but not as appealing as other older vintages.

Honey, burnt orange sugar, apricots, pineapples, vanilla and crème brulee soar from the glass. But, this wine is not produced in the style of modern Yquems. This does not have the nearly the same level of sweetness or viscosity found in the best vintages of the 80’s and 90’s. Perfectly balanced with the right amount of acidity to give it lift.

Excellent mid gold color. Excellent for Sauternes but not great Yquem. Very fresh, I would have guessed it to be 20 years old. Harmonious. Lacks typical Yquem richness, viscosity and complexity. Not much botrytis.

I was gifted a 750ml of 1949 d'Yquem. It is wrapped in wire mesh like an old Rioja. Anyone else seen this? Probably will save for Christmas dinner.
My apologies if inappropriate to post this here. I realize it is not a tasting note.

Baller dinner honoring Chicago winos -- 99 La Tache, 99 Leroy RSV, 07 SE & etc (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Bright amber. Fresh nose considering the age, burnt sugar, apricot, vanilla and black tea lightly brewed. Not showing much botrytis. Medium concentration and sweetness, bright acidity, excellent balance and seamless finish. Just like the last bottle, quite polished, really enjoyable but not a profound D’Yquem.
