  • Remarkably deep color. A whiff of VA. Amazingly sweet dark cherry with a mineral base and not much tannin. Shorter finish. A real bolt from the blue and far better than the only other time I had it back in 2016.

  • Still alive with a hint of sherried notes, fragrant nose. Light-medium bodied and medium finish. Palate was slightly simple despite the age.

  • Return to Italy: Pio Cesare, Gaja, Oddero, Tignanello and more (Flour Shop, Charlotte, NC) (Charlotte, NC): 9 hours in advance, decanted for 30 minutes, back in the bottle and slo-ox in temperature controlled cellar. Nicely aromatic nose of dried rose petals. Very cloudy and hazy in the glass. Smooth and refined on the mouthfeel. Flavorful notes of dried raspberries. Great texture and tasty, soft finish. A deliciously elegant Barolo that can complement aged Red Burgundy.

  • excellent again, my prior note applies... this one had a little more (surprisingly) tannin... actually -- at least when tasted after going into the decanter -- a bunch of tannin... settled from there with air and didn't impair the wines ability to shine!

  • opened this at around 1pm (for dinner at 6)... nothing wrong, light body, not a lot there... super pumped when I drank the first sip at dinner, this opened up and had red / dark red fruit with a nice layer of spice on top, great acidity, just a lovely elegant old old barolo... just what you want, easy going with some subtlety and med plus body

  • Beautiful nose & mouth feel, a great Barolo, one of the wines of the day

  • texture is the best part full body, expansive plush mouthfeel, still bright acid, but the earthiness, compost and mushrooms have overtaken the fruit.

  • Bottle in very good condition, small cork intact, no seepage. Medium brown core, medium garnet towards the rim, orange at the edges. Dried flowers, red fruit, cherry, plum, orange peel (or is it Grand Marnier?), earthy notes, light chocolate, light marzipan, sweet tobacco, intense spices, and balsamic notes, with lively acidity, mostly resolved tannin and superb length. Very salty. Light VA. Medium to full, and very lively and persistent. Became rich and smoothly textured with aeration. Very integrated and harmonious on day two. No need to hurry, not going down anytime soon. 92+

  • Old Barolo Night (Bar-a-Thym, Singapore): Somehow more advanced and a bit more tired than a fabulous 1958 Oddero from the same source - it was still good wine though, and certainly enjoyable in its own right. On the nose, this had more of the savoury saltiness and balsamic notes of an old Barolo than the 1958, with notes of meat and earth dancing about dark plummy fruit and more lifted smoke, spice and dried flower aromas. Very nice in an old Barolo way. The palate had a lovely liveliness to it still, with bright acidity and soft tannins draped over lovely round flavours of red fruit, earth, and some meat. Past the midpalate, a lovely blush of spice and just that tiny hint of flowers and orange peel drifted away into a decent finish. Enjoyable, if just starting to flag a bit in terms of depth. Drink up soon.

  • Opened and decanted 6 hours ahead. Cork stuck and completely disintegrated, necessitating filtering through a paper filter. Slow ox'd for 6 hours before drinking.
Nose of dark fruit. Substantial bricking. First sips were acidic with modest fruit. Smoothed out with minutes in the glass and became fruitier and more balanced with lots of unique and subtle flavors. Was actually better than expected for a fifty year old wine (opened to celebrate our 50th anniversary with our kids). Not a fabulous tasting wine by any means, but a memorable experience and glad we did it.

  • Very pale and rather thin brick-orange color with a deep golden hue toward the rim. The nose feels somewhat subdued even with some air, but showing a haunting array of developed aromas like wizened black cherries, sweet syrupy tones, a little bit of tar, light umami-driven salt-cured beef tones, a hint of sweet balsamic VA and a touch of tobacco. The wine is full-bodied, ripe and beautifully resolved on the palate with dark-toned tertiary flavors of dried sour cherries and wizened black cherries, some raisiny tones, a little bit of smoke-cured pork, light earthy spice, an aged hint of cacao nibs and a lifted touch of sweet VA. The wine feels wonderfully smooth and velvety on the palate with beautiful mature overall feel, yet the wine retains good sense of structure with its moderately high acidity and ripe tannins that still manage to offer a little bit of contrasting grip and roughness. The finish is very long, complex and slightly sweet-toned with a little bit of tannic grip and complex flavors of black cherries, dried dark fruits, some raisiny tones, a little bit of developed jammy red fruit character, light tobacco tones, a hint of earthy smokiness and a touch of lifted balsamic character.

A very beautiful, harmonious and enormously complex Barolo that is at its plateau of maturity - and has been there for some while, obviously. In a tasting of Odder Nebbiolos from 1978 to 1964, this was my wine of the night, even surpassing the great vintage of 1964. Very harmonious, silky-textured and compelling with layers upon layers of aromas and flavors with no characteristics overwhelming another. So very ethereal and beautiful.

  • Stood up for a week and decanted only 1hr before being returned to bottle (note: I had taken glass from Coravin two months ago). I may not have given this enough air, it was consistent with my previous notes but a little more muted and lacked enough acidity when paired with food. More like an old Clos St Jacques with earthy/leaves/tertiary savouriness and sweet fruit. Retained the clove and mint finish and drank best on its own. Elegant and traditional, but outclassed today. Drink now-2025. 92pts

  • I seem to have better bottles/experience of this wine that other CT reviewers. Similar to my last note, this was initially all acidic wet leaves, but blossomed with a few hours of air in a glass and again reminded me of a top old Clos St Jacques with a combination of earthy/leaves/tertiary interest, a touch of savouriness and remaining core of sweet fruit. Also has the pale tawny-rose appearance. This bottle had a slight hint of mint and clove on the finish which was very refreshing and draws you back for another sip. Really enjoy the mid-palate richness and elegant traditional wine-making of Oddero (their old vintages are highly under-rated imho). Drink now-2030. 94pts

  • Slightly turbid, light, and mature looking. Tasted 3 hours after a double decant. Prominent VA and a whiff of prune. Very light weight, tart, and earthy-nothing new fangled about this. It transiently sweetened and had a more integrated feel, but after several hours, the VA reasserted itself and the broader impression was of an old, oxidized wine. Not overtly flawed, just well over the hill. You win some and lose some with bottles approaching 50 years of age.

  • I'm a big fan of old Oddero's - one of the great (and great value) traditional producers. This bottle is a perfect one from my cellar and in no way over the hill. Fully mature though with the sweet rich fruit in the mid-palate that I love from the producer. Lots of tertiary interest here with leaves and truffle but also plenty of sweet fruit. Quite dark already, I'll drink my bottles over the next 5yrs. In taste it really reminds me of an old Clos St Jacques from Burgundy - that earthy character, richness and underlying sweet fruit with air. Needed 1hr in a glass to open up, a 6-8hr slow ox would be perfect for full bottles. 94pts.

  • This was the replacement bottle for the corked bottle that I brought to Racines this spring. Very dark color, way darker than expected for a 48 year old wine. Youthful on the palate, plummy, complete. JJR says dark, dense, not as complex as the others tonight ('86 Bartolo Mascarelo Barolo and '70 Marcarini Barolo), although still complex, with lots of dark fruit. Paired very well with three types of Flannery steaks. Philly weekend at Sarah and JJR's.

  • Initially rather musty, some think corked. Then this seems to wake up, showing classic Barolo notes of red fruit, cinnamon and dried spices. Then gets musty again. Something off here. Racines with Ray, Matt F.

  • Didnt write down at the time but this was sublime and in no way over the hill. Autumnal notes, dark chocolate, faint red berries, all perfectly integrated in a silky smooth texture.

  • Cork in near perfect shape considering the age, beautiful ruby coloration with slight bricking. Initial aromas of VA, tar, roses. Let it rest in a decanter for four hours and consumed over the following four hours. The wine was in remarkably good shape, some sediment but not as much as most Baroli of this age, intricate and shifting flavors of roses, leather, and everything else you would expect but all harmonious and balanced with good acidity. Tannin still present, this must have been a beast in the early years. Still going strong eight hours after opening and it was sad to see this beauty go. A very good bottle.

  • Bottle #065077. Upside-down label. Lots of black gunk in the neck and bottom of the cork. Only slight signs of bricking. Musty nose with mushroom notes dominating. Undertone on rose petals; not very much fruit on the nose. The palate is quite pretty, though this is definitely showing very slight signs of oxidation. Very restrained, with some earthy notes and tart red cherry. Tannins have completely faded away. Excellent.

  • Another very good bottle. Needs a good amount of air to open up and once it does, it rewards. I wouldn't wait much longer, It appears past its prime, but it was very enjoyable, The wife hated it, said it tasted like she was in a barn.... EXACTLY !!!!!

  • Amber rim and red core, a little turbid, lots of earthy tones, mushrooms, truffle and some tobacco and game. After a couple hours, some caramel and balsamic notes. Very complex and interesting, a bit short in the finish

  • To see such mixed results on this wine truly indicates serious bottle variation and most likely due to storage methods. We had a bottle of this wine to celebrate Mike W's birthday. The cork came out in almost pristine condition. The fill was HIGH NECK and the wine was a wonderful red with ever so slight bricking. The wine tasted awesome. Once it opened up the nose was simply wonderful, you knew this was going to be a great barolo. The mid palette has weight and complexity , tar, smokey meat, totally integrated and demonstrated secondary flavors and then some. The finished was 30 plus seconds and it pleased all of us. Provenance is of paramount importance on a 43 year old wine (in 2010). This was was properly cuddled by someone who most likely passed away before having the chance to enjoy this bottle of wine. I simply loved it and too bad my supplier ran out...I was going to back the truck up and buy as much of it as possible. Outstanding wine (for me).

  • Very soft cork, had to strain into decanter. Wine had pale red color and looks thin. All sings pointing to an over-the-hill wine, but it just isn't. Definitely near the end, but still some life there. Nice balsamic notes and subtle sour cherry. Bit short on the finish.

  • Fully mature, supercontrated, nose of port, somehow fresh and bright and yet smooth and completely well balanced. This is one of the best values I have had. Just got better as time went by.. Decanted for 2 hours , drank for 3 more.

  • I love old barolo and tried hard, but....... Bottle, fill and provenance (as they say..) all excellent. Cork difficult to extract and finally removed in 2 pieces. Amber colored wine with strong Madeira smell, not easily identifiable as nebbiolo. Initial impression : DOA, but I knew better because barolo can rally with air and I had read favorable reviews. 7 hours of air time was needed to allow this wine to transform into.......... a really dead wine. Nothing here. Not sure how representative this bottle is, but it looked to be in good condition. Maybe more breathing will improve it. I'll check back in a few years.

  • This is very delicate on both nose and palate but the acidity is excellent and the fruit seems like it will hang in there for a few more years.
