2002 Burgundy, round 2 (Noize): A slight chemically funk on opening, that blew off fairly quickly. An unusual wine with a lot going on (in the order I noted them down): soft cassis, burned caramel, campfire, cranberry, fresh red fruit, bitter orange and mezcal...! Enjoyable, but not a stand-out, and felt pretty young.

Drinking a point with plenty of fruit left here, some sous bois, good acidity, complete wine a bit on the masculine side for a Bonnes Mares, perhaps, and a great match with the morels. #SøllerødKro

2002 Burgundy Dinner (Chef Kang, MacKenzie Road, Singapore): This has been consistently good over three bottles, tasted over the course of 7 years or so. From a magnum this time, this had a lovely nose of blueberries and violets, earth and spice, with a just a touch of burnt rubber and a hint of meatiness to it. Lovely stuff, and quite characteristically Bonnes Mares to my mind. The palate was nice and approachable too. Perhaps a touch sterner, less charming than the nose, but very drinkable nonetheless. Here, plump flavours of blueberries and black cherries played against a backdrop of spice, mineral and earth. There was a nice sense of breezy freshness lent to it by some juicy acidity, but there was also an underlying structure of slightly drying, woody tannins that came up more as the wine moved into its long spicy finish. Altogether a yummy, if not quite complete Bonnes Mares. This did falter a bit against tough competition its flight-mates (superb 2002 Bonnes Mares from Mugnier and Vogue), but that would be nitpicking. This was very nice on the night. I did think that it should be drank sooner rather than later though, lest the fruit fades behind its structure.

Not a bad Saturday afternoon: Kind of muddled dark cherry with a touch of brown sugar. Nice, but not at the level I'd expect from this producer, vintage, and cru.

Upgrading my score from a few years ago. This has aged nicely. Felt this was deeper with more dark, black fruits. Really well balanced wine that was rich and texturally very interesting. Red and black fruit, earth, spices, cherries and blackberries. Really nice BM.

This was actually a really nice bottle Chez Potel, perhaps even better than a bottle I had about 4 years back. It had an excellent nose, full of sweet blueberries touched with smoky accents of earth, spice and meaty. Lovely. The palate had a touch of something slightly funky and furry to it, but there was a other a lovely sense of clarity to its pure, juicy blueberry notes. It was still youthful, with lots of Grand Cru depth to burn, but already starting to drink well. On the midpalate and beyond, more meaty and spicy tones pulled the wine into a nice long finish. A very full, complete wine - just what you would want from a Bonnes Mares.

Very nice. popped and poured but drank over 2-3 hours. well integrated at this point. would say drink now as this bottle tasted like it had some age. Have one left and will be a tough call to see how long I let it go. Figured the 02s would be much longer to develop.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Black fruit aromas with plenty of barnyard. Similar fruit on palate, modest spice, overall very forward. Slightly below expectations for a good producer's Bonnes Mares from a good vintage at this early stage.

beautiful wine at this stage of it's development. Tasted alongside 02 Perrot Minot Clos Vougeot, and while the two had different characteristics, both were now in very good drinking stages and excellent wines. I think both wines will live another 20 years but the fruit will never be more primary with still being open than now.

Meet the man - Nicolas Potel (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 13.5% This too is displaying complex savory meatiness, but with more solid expression of mineral, iron, blood as well as darker fruits and floral profile. Still pretty tight and not as developed as the Beze, of course, this is a stronger vintage afterall. Medium - full bodied. Powerful yet it is so weightless and fresh, with no hard edge at all. Harmony, pure and refine. This has certain class in it which make this stood out. Again, tannin is firm but polished and ripe. There is some savory, salinity tailing at the complex, intensely long finished. Very promising. 93-94+

2010 Maison Roche de Bellene / Nicolas Potel Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): A very good Bonnes Mares. Also from magnum, this yielded a rather tight, very deeply-set nose, with masculine aromas of earth and meat and undergrowth wed to deep blueberry notes. The palate had a great deal of power and presense behind its cool dark berry fruit expressions, wed to a savoury, meaty, earthy depth - all this layered in a nicely integrated whole. The quality of the 2002 vintage really showed up in way all that depth and power was supported by really fine tannins and supple acidity, lending the wine a clear purity in spite of its textured, masculine feel - the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. However, Like so many 2002s from these tougher terroirs, one could not help but feel that there was still something rather tight and unyielding at its core - perhaps the only thing that prevented me from liking this wine even more. Something a few more years in the bottle will hopefully cure - it did seem to come a bit looser and strut its stuff a little more with time in the glass, with the finish unwinding in a nice melange of savoury, slightly herby notes with blueberries and sweet wilting flower notes. A very nice wine but, at least from a magnum, one that needs more time yet.

Wine Berserkers Dinner (Lupa Trattoria, San Francisco, California): Floral notes on the nose. Rose perhaps? Some red berries as well. Deep red color and a touch tannic on the back end. Picks up some additional earthy notes with time. I suspect this still needs quite a bit more time.

WineBerserkers Burgundy OL (Lupa Trattoria, San Francisco, CA): Iodine and red fruit on the nose. More red fruit on the palate with great acidity. Light bodied, without a lot of complexity, but silky in the mouth with everything in balance. This suffered a bit in comparison to the big and sexy '05 Jadot CdlR.

Opened (not decanted) for about 2 hours prior to drinking. It is a beautiful burgundy with perfect balance. The subtle minerality and compelling earthiness pair with a nice acidity making this a gorgeous food wine that shines on its own but leaves room for the food shine as well.

A delightful wine brimming with flowers and dirt. Quite accessible now, this wine should only improve with time. A lovely Bonnes Mares that will hopefully gain some depth on the finish with age.

Thursday night with Charlie, Dan and Chris (Chateau MacKay): Earth, spice, and strawberry on the nose. Flavors have good depth with lots of nice red fruit and a slight minty note towards the finish. Very very smooth and tasty but it still seems like there's a lot more waiting to reveal itself, given enough time.

Medium color with some traces of maturity. Initially, pine needles and real earthiness. Then, redder fruit comes out. Chambolle-like tart red fruit with the acidity poking out ever so slightly, medium weight. This develops some sweetness and anise, but it seems stuck at the Premier Cru level, never really revealing the sap, depth, or breadth I would expect. Fine as a drink but nowhere near where a Bonnes Mares from this vintage should be.

Rousseau / Potel / Prieur Dinner (Knightsbridge): Full red purple color. Forward bright spicy earthy briar nose. Tight black fruit and spice with good acidity and spice. Like most Bonnes Mares, this one is showing tight and young.
