Concerned about the aging potential of E&M wines. Decanted and took about 1 h to open up. Now 2h after decanting. Brambly, ripe green stem aromas like a forest after rain, just ripe black cherries, hint of earth. Palate with just ripe cherries, bark, hint of green stems and earth. Nice acids, medium to full bodied. Excellent concentration. Weightier than in its youth but works really well here. Still with bright lovely fruit and excellent balance. Aging well and wish I had more to see how this evolves. Drinking really well now but has more to give.

Best bottle yet. Pure, lifted, brambly strawberry fruit, light on its feet but with persistence. Rose like in some ways, as l’Anglore or others achieve. In a great spot to drink now.

Consistent with previous note, although the fruit has gotten a little more concentrated aromatically (it's still basically translucent in the glass and highly cooling/bright/tart on the palate) and the pine needles have subsided somewhat, although there is still a strong herbal/forest element. It's still fabulous and an *absurd* bargain for the complexity it serves up. Jill loves it too and nails it blind as German Pinot Noir.

Light and beautifully aromatic. Red fruits and undertones of pine needles/winter forest. Can't get over how gorgeous the nose is. Soft and light on the palate. Yum.

This second bottle, drunk a year later, showed further development. Some bricking at the edges and a very pale color give rise to some concern, but as the wine sits in the glass it develops a marvelous bouquet of smoke, varietal fruit and earth. A firm spine of acidity guarantees a good match with food (in our case, roast duck with sauteed shi'itakes). I'd say that this wine has only a few years left before it slides into senescence, so enjoy it while you can.

Decanted. Now 2 hr later. Initially, very brambly with green leaves and stems, spice and a hint of fruit. Now better balanced but still with prominent green leaves, bark, anise, earth, and a bit of fruit. P: Ripe red fruits, anise, bark, earth with a some tannin on midpalate. Light to medium bodied. Nice acids. F: Bark, green leaves and fruit interwoven together with a lingering bark/green leaves/cinnamon taste. Nicely done but I think it's beginning to shut down a bit. Open the last bottle in about 3-5 yrs..

A fascinating expression of Pinot Noir. Consumed tonight with caneton aux navets, a great match. The wine was smoky, earthy, mineral and sappy, all overlaying a core of fresh red fruit. The purity of the Pinot Noir character stood out for me, reminding me of some of my formative Pinot Noir experiences. Not Burgundian, but neither is it New World. Rather, it stands apart as a unique expression of the grape. Positively more-ish.

Gorgeous looking wine, clear and light. On the nose there's wild red berries, raspberries mostly. Lovely sweetness in the fruit. Creamy chocolate, powded sugar and a little cinnamon in the finish. Very balanced. Round, young acidity and wild raspberry dominates the palate. After a couple of hours more herbs and a note of spice of some kind, makes the wine even more interesting imo. Still lightweighted and powerful at the same time, amazing value at €17.

Drank with 2011 in comparison. More on black fruited spectrum, a bit weightier. Still with earth and brambles. Really nice pinot fruit. Really enjoyed this salmon. Both 2012 and 2011 were opened ~3h ahead of time. No decant.

This wasn't as good as my first bottle. Bright citrus in the foreground that overwhelmed everything else and felt almost synethetic, but that's not exactly the right descriptor (maybe more "varietally incorrect" or overwrought?). A pretty good drink, but not fine. Will try to get to my last 2 bottles sooner than later. Don't think these are destined to go too long.

Pale ruby. Now opened for 2 hrs but from the get go, this was kicking aromatically. After 2 hrs in decanter A - Complex. Bark, baking spice, green herbs, flowers, earth, maybe a hint of berries. P- Seamless whole of bark, ?eucalyptus, mint, earth, soy, and black fruits. F - slightly bitter earth, bark, soy and a bit of fruit. Delicious. Complex but gulpable. Seamless. This is really good and a steal.

Very light in colour, translucent. Nose is red berry fruit, not particularly ripe but clean, fresh strawberry dominates. At first it seems youthful, light and without much body. As it breathes it really adds weight and complexity and packs a big punch of fruit and crisp acidity. Altogether a very interesting wine, firmly in the Burgundian style ... Similar to a Chambolle.

Opened one hour in advance. Very pale. Complex cherry/spice/licorice aroma. Rich, full, slightly sweet flavors of red fruit, licorice. Full on licorice finish.
New World leanings, though it has more delicacy and nuance than the typical New World profile. Reminiscent of a good Oregon Pinot Noir. Excellent, with a nice edginess, but a bit sweeter than I prefer. There's a good chance it will improve with time.

This differs from the 07-09s in that it has an intriguing green aroma (bay leaf? Menthol? Geranium? Some strange stalky pollen?) and seems just a touch hotter at 13%, but my beloved Black Forest skunky wine is here and this is just gorgeous. Pomegranate, blood orange, and cranberry. Lacks just a tiny bit of heft on the finish to be truly stratospheric. Tarragon, capers, roses...

Somewhere between Old World and New World (the best of both). Very fruit driven, but still light-bodied and elegant. Very enjoyable. Not sure it is much of an ager, but we'll see.

The Vineyard Lunch Gang Visits Saralee's + 97 Pentagon & 02 Trenton: I think this is only the second German Pinot Noir I have tasted although I have wanted to explore them at some stage. Upon tasting this wine, I was intrigued. A very high acid red wine. The nose did smell like sauvignon blanc. Cat pee and grass. If the aromatics were more complex, I would have really enjoyed this wine.

Delicious! Lovely, bright, classic pinot. It has a light touch but with persistence. Beats plenty of Bourgogne villages for double the price.
