  • 2017 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/9/2017-11/14/2017 (Villa D’este, Lake Como and Milan): Rather shy nose displaying subtle red fruit, a hint of blood, tapenade, garrigue and leather and earth. Fully integrated palate, shy red fruit, medium acidity and a short to medium finish. This particular bottle is past its prime. The remnants of classic Chave profile makes it still enjoyable. Perhaps better in Magnum format?

  • At Balon Restaurant in Hong Kong - An excellent bottle that improved further in the glass. Lots of meaty and smokey bacon flavours. More than sufficient acid to compliment the food as well. I think the CT drinking window is way off here; definitely some years in front of it.

  • From a bottle that had been coravinned a couple of weeks ago. Oooh, this is lovely. Still quite luminous color. The mature cassis fruit still has good freshness, supported by lots of campfire smoke and meat, with hints of olives and flowers, there's maybe a little brett in there but not enough to detract. Still quite concentrated with a beautiful silky texture, this is at a lovely state of maturity, where any tension between the fruit and structure has fully resolved and integrated but the wine hasn't started to get short/tart or dry out. This is miles better than several bottles from more heralded older vintages of Chave I tasted in a big vertical last year.

  • A generous Coravin pour from a previously un-accessed bottle, and firing on all cylinders fresh out of the gate. Extremely fresh and young. Dark cranberry/raspberry fruit, a lot of citrus, florals, a touch of olive. Medium-plus body; zesty, tingly texture; very mouth-filling. Distinctive and excellent. Shows what a great producer can do in an unheralded vintage.

  • Kicking off a week of anniversary celebrations: Pale red, pure essence of Syrah fruit with tart wild berry, kirsch, blue stone fruits, beautiful hints of grilled meat. There is an intoxicating blend of wild green herbs with a great balance of tannin, fruit and perfect acidity.
    More please!!

  • Bright ruby red; lavender, sl iron/red meat and herbal nose; tart red cherry, red current flavors, sauvage, meaty flavors and flinty undertones, very soft velvety mouth feel, completely mature tannins; crisp finish with palate cleansing acidity. A wine that manages to be both elegant and have concentration that gives weightiness. Long finish ending in lightly tart red cherry flavors.

  • NYC Offline (Fabio's): Color has started to fade, quite easy to see through the light red color. Nose is just delightful and continually changed over the course of 5+ hours. Plenty of bacon, pepper, old coffee grinds on the nose at first. Later on in the night, olives made an appearance on the nose and then at one point, it smelled like an ashtray. Just really interesting how this changed. The wine itself was very enjoyable. Plenty of fruit was still there with red currant, dark cherry, and pomegranate playing the major roles. Fruit started to fade around hour 4.5 in the glass, but at 29 years old, this wine is still kicking.

  • 'Casa Ray' offline: Sweet, gently spicey old syrah nose. Rounded and smooth. Lovely poise and balance. Very similar to keith's 82 at the blind Challenge although with less obvious acidity. A lovely mellow old wine. ****1/2
