Smelled tired with unattractive dried prune, the palate was waifish, shrill acidity (the hallmark of 1996?), thin and without much fruit left. Further air didn't improve things, with the acid continuing to stick out.
From a bottle alleged to have excellent provenance, professional cellared and through the official importer at the time. Clean cork, although weak. Don't think there were any faults with the bottle. Pretty disappointing given the producer and the great Ile des Vergelesses vineyard.

A lovely, mature nose of undergrowth, red licorice, red pinot fruit, and violet. It's graceful, yet deep and intense on the palate with more of the same. It comes across as power carried by a near weightless frame with a cashmere like texture. Drinking at absolute peak. Very long on back end. An understated beautiful wine. Delicious.

This is a proper grown-ups wine - so much refinement, complexity and less-is-more elegance. Very fined boned but the years have given this a touch of meaty hung-game and funky cherry on the nose - there is a lurking sweetness on the nose that comes up on the palate as acidic and tarte - they work well together. Needs food (a nice fatty duck would be brilliant) as the acidity really starts to show after 2 hours.
As a side note I drank from both a Zalto Burgundy glass and a Spiegelau Burgundy glass - the Zalto really accentuated the game and perfume, whereas the Spiegelau brought out the fruit.
Takes time to open up to a gently red-fruited palate underpinned by marks from the soil. Pure expression, the rugged soil of Pernand showing through. The fruit is still persistent, tannins are marked. Lovely wine, understated and elegant.

Paul D's Chandon de Briailles @ 28-50 (28-50, Fetter Lane, London): A little leaner, brighter, more focused, just the right side of shrill. Cuts through the duck beautifully. Shows the structure of the vineyard without some of the gloss of prettier vintages, but it works well. Bare ****

A deeper and cooler dark fruited nose. Deeper cherry, plum almost cassis. Nice perfume. Supple and full bodied, structured but round around the edges. Quite deep, and with a darker earthy side. Outstanding balance, good length and a cooler savory backend. Outstanding and early peak. 91pts

This was a disappointment. It presented itself with a robust nose of dried flowers and cherry==should have been a clue. On the palate, it was dry, tart with a short finish. I have passed the window of excellence for this wine and should drink up the remaining 4 soon.

Sunday dinner and with a mellow night in view, this seemed a nice fit. Light to medium in body with rustic fruit and a slightly acidic finish. I was underwhelmed and will have to contrast this against the 03 later this week. I will likely drink up in the next couple years.

A bit thin on opening but fattened after an hour to be an enjoyable soft lovely burg

Has come around nicely with aging and nice sappy, elegant red fruited Burg.

Clearly superior to the 98. Much more fruit, an attraktive nose and mid finish. Drink up the first day, it fades fast the next day.
