6th of 9, opened 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, although a bruiser, a surprisingly fine 04 is developing here, lovely nuanced black cherry and earthy mineral flavours, intense and concentrated, upside, 12+ years. F (17.5).

4th of 9, opened an hour, perfect cork and level, evolving nicely to show good depth of black cherry fruit, earth, sous bois, slightly too edgy and high toned as yet but upside here and good life ahead for an 04. F (17.5).

You sometimes forget what Comte Lafon can do with red wine. They are made with all the same passion and skill as his whites. This was a lovely wine still showing really good fruit and structure. Lovely pretty wine with all the finesse one expects of an excellent Volnay

1st of 9, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level - dark, dense and slightly dusty red, notably leggy; pure black cherry with a hint of spice, pure, primary; fullish, long and persistent, clean and fresh for an 04, quality fruit, young. F (17.5).

Medium ruby color. Nose of violets, stems, stone, raspberry, cherry pits. Medium weight red raspberry fruit with iodine, brier, and bits of iron on the palate. Bright acidity and fairly filed off tannin leading to medium length finish of stony red fruit. Very open and capable of ageing years more.

Really lovely and at peak. Took 45 minutes to fully open up but it was interesting at every stage. Balanced with bright acidity, red fruit, integrated tannins, good length.

A long life ahead of it. Quite rich and round, it put to shame many far more expensive wines from this tricky vintage. No trace of 2004 oddities. I wish that I'd purchased a few more back then.

Served blind at L'Astrance. Guessed Volnay (maybe Chambolle) from a good vintage due to the bright red fruit expression, lean mineral texture that was bolstered by the round fruit on the palate. It had spice, earth, fine tannins and medium length. Good finesse and a nudge of complexity. I was shocked at the reveal from the somm that this was a 2004. First that a 2004 would be served at fine restaurant and second that it was a perfect match to the food and without a hint of the GM.

Simply spectacular, even more so in light of the vintage. Dark black cherry nose, with some black pepper and fir. Some nice aromas of barnyard funk as well. More dark stone fruits on the palate, with dense flavors of cherry, kir, molasses, animal, and leather. Awesome mouthfeel and texture. The rustic side of Volnay. This one's less about the pulp and more about the bramble and grapeskin. This bottle could have easily gone another year or two but couldn't take the chance with this '04, what can you do. Enjoyable nonetheless. Surprisingly impressive grape juice.

The wines of of Comtes Lafon, with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Side by side with the 2006. In all fairness it is very good for a 2004, with the lightest of bitterness and other foul issues attributed to the ladybird vintage( more of a north issue anyway) Light green notes, good fruit but a wine that maybe ( and hopefully) time will help. 86-88 for now though.

Volnay with Luis Gutierrez (Enoteca Barolo - Madrid): Dark violet young colour. Super-reducted. Chocolatey, coffee, earthy ... but closed, really closed. Greener cause this vintage. With time, reflects how good it is. Opulent on the palate. Particularly round.
Color joven a cereza oscura. Superreducido. Achocolatado, café, terroso,...pero cerrado, realmente cerrado. Más verde por la añada. Con tiempo refleja lo bueno que es. Particularmente redondo.

Nose of cherries and raspberries, also some earthy tones. Full bodied taste, cassis like, some darker plum tones; soft tannins, medium finish. The only drawback is that in the end palate the wine appears a bit heavy on the alcohol. This 2004 develops well, no green problems.

definitely some mean greenies on the nose along with ripe fruit...great texture on the palate and medium full...certainly not a textbook Volnay but enjoyable if the green notes don't bother you

Trip to Burgundy; 3/20/2006-3/24/2006 (Burgundy): Tasting, brief note. Ripe for the vintage with fun black and blue fruit that does not come across as particularly concentration, but accessible and enjoyable for the near-term.
