2013 Sanguis My Soul Is Rested

  • Pop and pour into a decanter. In the glass, very dark purplish-red. On the nose, blueberries lead the way, followed by fresh ground pepper, honeysuckle, roses, and a hint of peach. Even if I hadn't read the other tasting notes, this is clearly a co-fermented blend (which Sanguis does very well, and which I love - such fun wines). On the palate, a cool burst of dark berries on the attack, followed by a wild, not particularly integrated mix of fruit and almost-funky floral notes. I kind of agree with every other taster's notes, but I think I'm closest in spirit to Quiet Lion's note - treat it like a delicious cocktail wine. It's a wild thing, and I wish I had a case of it.

  • Fat and juicy with opulent dark red fruits and spice. Heady cocktail wine.

  • Decanted one hour and served with king salmon. One of the craziest creative efforts from one of my favorite winemakers, this blend of equal parts Petite Syrah and Roussanne(!) with splashes of Grenache and Syrah shows a dissonant palate of dark fruit and juicy tropical flavors. It's tasty for sure although I'm not sure I'd call it integrated. Consider it a delicious cocktail wine and you'll be happy. No idea if it will improve with age but I don't think there's any hurry to drink.

  • Dinner with H and J. I would have guessed this to be more Syrah dominant. Lavished with bacon fat and lavender, this beauty takes an hour to open in the glass. Savory and meaty with beef blood, iron and herbs. Dark fruits with hints of cranberries on the palate with medium to full body on the palate and an expressive and satisfying finish. Still has many years to go. Drink now (with decant) to 2027. Worth Seeking Out.

  • Super interesting co-fermented blend of 45% Petite Sirah, 45% Roussanne, 6% Grenache and 4% Syrah.

Deep and dark purplish red. Layered nose with tons of dark chocolate floating out of the glass. Layers of dark berries, black pepper, white pepper, purple floral notes, spices and herbs. Got a bit more savory and gamey as it opened up. Moderate tannins (6.6/10) and medium plus body. Big and juicy with dark cocoa, tight dark berries, bramble, dark spices, a touch of heat and anise in the finish. Long and lingering finish. Quite heavy and needs some time to fully integrate. Great wine. Drink from 2019 till 2026.

  • (Tasted at the winery with H.) 40% Petite Syrah co-fermented with 40% Roussanne with the rest of the blend made up of Syrah and Grenache. Clearly a high-risk co-fermentation project that paid big dividends. Mardi Gras in a glass, starting with a spice-driven nose that continues onto the palate, where it is joined by ripe figs (H), balsamic reduction and bacon fat. Irresistible at this stage, the wine promises to integrate even more fully over time. Bravo.
