Lovely wine, nice balance, some tertiary development. Been into lighter reds lately so it comes across a bit stewed, but still delicious. Evolves with air. Drink or hold.

Deep garnet colour. Pronounced clean nose, bramble, plum, prune, vanilla, smoke, spice, leather, violets, liquorice, chocolate. Developing. Dry, high acidity, high ripe tannins, high alcohol, very full body, long finish. Outstanding, big wine, but everything in balance, with plenty of structure and concentration for further tertiary development. In your face, but with some finesse too.

Noble Rot Sagrantino Dinner (Noble Rot, Swan Lane, Wellington, New Zealand): Fascinating to finally taste this wine; dark russet-red colour, big nose of red cherry and blackberry fruits, concentrated and ripe, with a velvety texture and a good wallop of smooth cream and buttery notes on the finish. Reminiscent of a big oaky California Cabernet Sauvignon but otherwise a good if straightforward wine. Paired with the Paolo Bea with the cheese course, perhaps unfairly; it cannot hold a candle to the beautiful, layered and intricate complexity of the Pagliaro.

Black Lion Wine Club - Central Italy Whites and Tuscan Reds (The Black Lion): Deep garnet colour. Lifted ripe fruits, especially plum, vanilla, smoke, spice, leather, violets, liquorice. Developing. Dry, high acidity, high ripe tannins, high alcohol, very full body, long finish. Outstanding, big wine, but everything in balance, with plenty of structure and concentration for further tertiary development. In your face, but with some finesse too.

Very interesting wine for this price. Full of rich dark berry fruit and dark cherries, refreshing acidity but very very strong and grippy tannin which means you want to have this with a proper piece of steak.

All my sagrantino reviews seem to include "needs more time or longer decant." That grape is a brute! Again, 3 hrs not enough. Luscious Syrah nose, but still tight.

Texas Wine School - Italian Wine Scholar Class. Deep ruby in color, with no sign of aging. The nose is clean, and a little closed despite having been opened for several hours. This wine definitely needs to be decanted. After much swirling, it opens up slightly to reveal ripe black cherry, savory herbs, wild violets, licorice and smoke. The palate is dry, and consistent with the nose. The tannins are almost painfully high and gripping which, combined with the medium to medium (+) acidity, results in a very astringent and mouth-drying flavor profile. The alcohol is listed at 15% but appears to be lower, which is indicative of the massive structure of this wine. IMHO opinion, this wine is still too young to drink. At a minimum, it needs to be double decanted and consumed with grilled meats. 2010 was a big vintage in Central Italy, so this wine should be best from 2020 through 2025

Big, rich, ripe black fruits, with massive tannins and a very slight impression of sweetness after the other wines. Really good but a bit over the top on its own at this Italian class. Needs a big protein rich meal.

After 90 minutes a nice nose of sour cherry, menthol and chocolate. Needs drinking at that point as if left longer the tannins just become overwhelming. There is a decent wine in here but monumental, rasping tannins dry our the cherry flavoured fruit.

At the winery: Fresh, pure ripe blackberry, loganberry, raspberry; soft leather/licorice; super silky, great structure, tannins, dark chocolate, has potential, but '08 takes the cake now. 91+

Montefalco Visit '15; 9/15/2015-9/20/2015 (Montefalco, IT): Young, but so pure and clean. These guys just get SdM! Mint, menthol on the nose, hint of salumi with air. On the palate, cherries, mint, cocoa, alive and tingly, huge acid and tannin. Needs time but it's a beauty.

Strong tannin, lotsnof acidity, but also a complex palate with plum, oak, tobacco. 10 more years and it will be perfecr.

Very full ripe nose, spicy oak, dark fruit
Big tannins, grippy ripe though, not rustic
Bloody fruit, so rich and savoury
Nutty finish
Long
Great stuff. Manages to have all the power of a classic Sagrantino but with a bit more elegance.
