This was a beautiful wine - but it is young and wound up. After a few hours in the decanter it started to open up. We had it with our Thanksgiving dinner and it was outstanding with food. The nose shows violets and dark fruits at this point, and the palate is elegant and long, with rich deep fruit. It should really shine in another 10-30 years. I have 1 bottle left and I'll hold it for as long as I can.

Brunello 2004 Horisontal (My House): Elegant and intense wine with refined cherry and strawberry fruit. It feels youthful but I would doubt that it has the ability to become better with age. Still, a great wine!

Lunch with Thibaut and colleagues (Praelum Wine Bistro): Pale ruby. Quite a punch of earth, pepper, cinnamon, red cherry, and raspberry on the nose. Generally a savoury mineral tone on the palate, with a rather shale slatey darkness, red cherry, raspberry, moss, twigs, cedar, pepper and nutmeg flavours. Lengthy and complex. Great wine!

A boire urgemment !

[Blind] Vibrant bright red cherry. Super youthful, a little too so for me. Tart cranberry. Palate is far more approachable, round and fairly easy going with softer strawberry. Taken off the list in a very reasonable corkage negotiation arrangement.

The New Generation in Burgundy (Zoom!): Lafon have half of this vineyard. Lovely shimmering red. Lightly extracted. Pierre Lafon comments that the wine is a bit tight at the moment and needs air - they slow-oxed their bottle overnight and indeed my sample did improve in glass. Powdery, floral nose. Refined on the palate, maybe slightly clipped and reduced and there's still some tannin in evidence. Quintessential 2014. Pierre says this wine is perfect at 8-10 years after the vintage, unless you're in England in which case more like 20.

this was very nice, drank over three nights and improved generally as the time passed, this was generally lifted and leaner side, red fruit with spice and very nice acidity... I like this style so for some it wouldn't have enough body but for me it was elegant and lifted... certainly has many more years to go (10-15?)

Some recent goodies: Lafon, Bachelet, Dom, Fourrier, Sabine, Special Club; 12/7/2017-12/16/2017: Dark in color but it is light and lively in every way. First, this is just delicious, with dark, tart, cherry and plum. It dances nimbly, flashing its fruit, while droping hints of happy holiday spices, pretty earth, and black tea. Amazing wine that is really delicious right now, with power and complexity that will only make it better over time.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Pier Sixty - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. Very pretty red fruit with savory spice. Seem sto start out as a forward and accessible wine, but there is an expanding finish that teases us with some intriguing structure. A sneaky wine I truly want to taste one year from now. 92-94 point potential.

La Paulée Grand Tasting of 2014 Vintage Burgundy (Pier 60, New York): Medium red. Forward red fruit and soil on the nose. Medium weight, unusually concentrated for Volnay, but in the most positive sense. Ripe red cherry, earth-infused, soft wood in the background, delightful finish. Wow, these three Premier Crus in both colors were stunning this year.

One of the most elegant young Lafon Santenots I can remember. There is still sneaky power here and the requisite depth to age for a very long time. It really fans out on the finish.

Louis xiv believed Volnay improved his health. After falling on a broken escalator today so do I.

Comtes Lafone also makes nice red wine. This Volnay has nice generous fruit. Balance.
