A lightly floral nose of sour cherry, raspberry and oak-inflected sandalwood, with touches of forest floor and chypre - pretty, but a bit muted. Polished tannins wrap a succulent and high-toned acidity, evidently well-made and very Volnay, but the fruit is somewhat lacking and the overall impression slightly austere. Over time, the tannins assert themselves. This may improve, but I’m not necessarily convinced.

Interestingly this was probably the most closed of the bottles I've had; I was under the impression that it wasn't going to shut down, but it definitely seemed tighter and more austere. The nose was still fairly open, but I suspect this will actually be better at 10-12 years than it is currently. Hold for now, though sadly I'm out of bottles...

Winetasting @romaintaupenot #taupenotmerme #moreysaintdenis 2014 this is drinking superbly a lovely balance between red fruits and forest floor. Palate has red plums, cherry, strawberries and raspberries with a gentle acidity and oak spice and is, to be frank, bloody lovely . @domaine_michel_lafarge #volnay #vendagesselectionees 2014 very young with some grippy tannins, but plenty of fruit to make it accessible now, but I'm laying the other 5 bottles for 10 years. . @domaine_de_l_arlot #nuitstgeorges 2013. Just starting to hit its stride. Dark red fruits and some earthiness. Smooth tannins and lots of fruit, in a few years this will be stunning . @frommwinery #cuveeh 2015. Their first vintage of this new cuvée and what a delicious wine. A little smokiness, savoury red cherry and a little soy sauce. A touch lighter than the burgundies but a beautifully balanced wine and certainly has a few more years to develop . @feltonroad #calvert 2017 An absolute wonderful nose of red cherry, spicey cloves, a little smoke. This is such a lovely drinking wine right now a real delight for a #pinotlover

Casual and Great Domaine Lafarge Tasting (Chez Winefool): Full, substantial nose of red and black cherry with spice and florals. Excellent concentration and richness for a village wine. Nuances of spice and musk are just starting to emerge. Seamless balance. Upside as this settles into its prime drinking window over 5-10 years.

Drinking Some Great Lafarge as an Hommage to Becky Wasserman (The Winefool - Chicago IL): Floral and slightly spiced with red cherry, all coming across as prototypically Volnay. Very good density for its level, if blind we all would have thought this 1er Cru. Restrained start, opened up with 15-20 minutes in the glass. Great value wine. Better 2024-2034.

Superbe vin. 91+ pts

This has been drinking well since release for me; this bottle is beginning to close down just a bit; the nose is still fabulous; super pure and airy red berry fruits, floral notes, mineral notes; absolutely classic Volnay; the palate however has tightened up with the tannins showing a bit more and closing things up quickly. Would probably recommend holding a few years at this point to let this re-open. Try again 2023-2024

PNP.

This is beautiful Volnay. Dark ruby in color with a lovely nose of floral notes, ripe red fruits, a hint of sandalwood, anise, orange peel, and stone. The palate is elegant, but as is classic to the Lafarge style it definitely has some structure. Delicious now with food, but with the balance and stuffing to age for a decade easily. Delicious.

extraordinary elegant village, i would advise to wait 2024+ to drink, at the moment it is very primary, red fruit are dominant but the level of finesse and balance are striking, very long in the glass without a fuss, after a while secondary aromas of tea and leaves emerge, everything always very elegantly, velvety tannins, such an easy drink, but time will add weight and complexity in my opinion and its worth waiting a few years to enjoy in full

This was just a killer Volnay and shows exactly what I want from a Volnay; a lifted and purse nose of strawberry, currant, and raspberry with violet and lily, hints of minerality. Really smells like the essence of Volnay to me; the palate is ethereal and elegant, yet by no means "light"; this just gives flavor after flavor and lingers; a beautiful wine.

2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): Give this deep ruby Pinot plenty of air time at this point, as it shows very little during the first 1-2 hours following decantation. Thereafter, it offers nice aromatics and flavors, delivering a payload of raspberries, orange peel, Asian spices and black tea. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic and with medium sweet tannins, it has good mid-palate density and finishes with good length. Although pleasant, this wine should improve with some additional time in the cellar. Drink 2019-2025.

Light, acidic, earthy, and restrained, with cream, smoke, and fish. Length is excellent with a nice sour twist in the end. There are some dirty notes that come and go. Strong suspicion of a lurking cork here.

From a special parcel of vines within the Volnay village appellation. A touch darker than the standard Volnay, with more intensity and length. A beautiful Volnay from a classic vintage. One for lovers of true Volnay.
