  • Gorgeous. I treated this bottle much more carefully and it paid off hugely. Stood up for two days - there is a lot of very fine sediment. Opened and slow oxed for two hours and then decanted three hours before we drank it. Beautiful nose with classic cumin seed and anise, lovely dark and red fruit, and something a blind taster called Hawthorne - by which I think he meant and herbal, woodsy aroma. A complex, alluring, and grand cru nose, with a mineral feature that I’ve found in other Richebourg and want to call dry red clay, although I’m sure that’s not part of the actual richebourg soil. But that’s what it makes me think of. The palate was gorgeous too, balanced and expansive and expressive, fresh and also savory. Not as dense and loaded as the greatest of Richebourgs. And it’s not among the greatest Richebourgs. But it’s a fantastic wine.

  • 2018 notes remain accurate - 3 years later, all of those descriptions are still applicable although muted. This must have been a grand dame in its day, but appears to be on the downhill side. Still lovely, light, and full of funk, but definitely near the end of its road. If you have this in your cellar, drink it now.

  • A gift of a dinner for Joao's 40th (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): 3rd time we cross paths with this wine ( Papies 95 & 93 in 2010 & 2011) and ironically the second time we have this side by side with the 2001 Vougeraie Musigny (Papies 97)
In a great place now and was just a superb wine. Dark fruited, spice, roast meaty side. Quite intense on the dark smoky side (maybe the barrel?) . Rich wine, very elegant and just delicious. Lovely depth of of flavor and with a lot of length. Really a masterclass of a wine. 96

  • I really don't know where I am on this. It was a bit opaque and I think I should have stood it up for a day or so before opening. The nose was lovely, showing pure and fresh red and dark fruit, cinnamon and other spices, and an earthy bassnote. Lovely on the palate too, but without the intensity, depth, or breadth that I would expect from this incredible vineyard. Perhaps too young. Perhaps not a great bottle.

  • First time I've ever had a Richebourg so had only my experience of other Burgundies to go on. It was dark Ruby and a delicate nose of red fruit, mushrooms and spice, I was expecting a more powerful one. The palate started of red cherry, some acidity but it was smooth and structured, but I felt a bit disappointed. Then the finish kicked in and it took it to a whole different level with complex things going on. I'm not sure if this is typical or not, but it certainly was nice. Not sure it's complete value for money but I think you need to try wines so you can broaden your horizon. I really would like to try one from a great vintage as I'm sure it would be something very special. This was lovely and interesting. 94 points

  • A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Burgundy, Piedmont, Riesling, Champ and Sautenres (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Dense masculine nose displaying deeply toned red fruit, a hint of smoke, dark spices and earth. Excellent concentration, deeply toned concentrated blackberry driven palate impression, good mineral presence and medium long dense finish. Considering the vintage, I am surprised by how masculine and innexpressive this is showing. Cellar for another ten years and hope for the best.

  • Popped and poured. Was hard to assess given all that was going on, so I will just say very good, but not great, and possibly better than that if given some air. B+/A-

  • Just doesn't seem to be doing what I know it is capable of. I'm hoping it's a dumb phase, because it is not all that enjoyable as is. Plenty of acidity to hold off for a few years to see what happens to it, but this bottle feels a bit cooked.

  • Fill a little low, and cork stained to the top. Color shows a bit of age. The nose was great right out of the bottle, and this also showed pretty open right out of the bottle. Even better with 30 minutes of air. Sweet cherry fruit, some oak as expected. Very nice overall, and easy to drink right now. Maybe not what you expect for the price, but a very enjoyable wine. A-/A

  • A great showing yet again! Rich, sumptuous, excellent! Nose was a little tight right out of the bottle, but with a little over two hours in the decanter it started to shine. Woodsy sous bois, sweet cherry, clean mushroom, slight smokiness, and hints of mint, toffee and anise in the nose. The palate took even longer to show well, starting a little thin and backwards early on, but as it opened the beautiful richness and elegant texture were unbeatable! Sous bois, deep bing cherry, pomegranate, mushroom, subtle anise, sunflower and hints of extraction on the palate.

Can't say enough about the elegance of texture this offers. It seems to almost melt into the tongue like a warm pad of butter.

  • Beautiful complex nose seems to continually hint at something else. The bouquet started with a slightly sweet smokiness and finally ended with an intoxicating fresh mushroom aroma. Nice medium body and the color was a deep, almost brooding, brick-red that becomes almost completely transparent on the edges of the glass. All mineral up front with a slight herby/spicy follow-through and maybe a hint of bing-cherry on the on the bright, long finish. The wine feels silky yet strong. Outstanding wine!

  • Another fine great showing from this lovely wine. However one point to note (This is our second TN on the wine within a year) is that the nose sort of fell off a cliff. Not sure if it s the bottle or the age of wine but it feels it is loosing its vibrancy. Away from the on the palate this continues to be a very elegant wine. Shame on the nose. Drink now

  • Joao introduces the Dark Side with 2001 Grand Crus (Chez Rosa-Teixeira, London): Joao introduces the Dark Side with 2001 Grand Crus, London June 5th 2010
(side by side Louis Remy Chambertin, A-F Gros Richebrourg & Vougeraie Musigny)

Oh wow. This is a superb wine and stood its ground vs the Musigny. Open and big yet still very complex wine with a big nose that kept you going back and back for more. Good on the body and maybe had 2minute finish. We cannot say enough good things about this wine. Apparently the richebourgs are the more austere of the Burgandies and the more we discussed this the more of that element we found in it. This wine is beautiful to drink now and can last 5yrs.

Vs the musigny this felt more complete, although it didnt have the majestic nose of the musigny, and at 50% of the price this is the one to buy!

  • Inizalmente selvatico e ridotto, poi evolve sulla viola ma rimane sempre sul cupo e sul foxy, senza mai decollare. La bocca comunque è sempre piacevole e abbastanza succosa.
