  • Side-by-side with 01 Bartolo Mascarello, this was a bit more reserved and less expressive. Good core of very classic fruit with earth and floral accents, but just a bit muddled and less precise. Bottle opened 24 hours in advance for a slow-o. A little hard to figure.

  • I am extremely sensitive to TCA and L is even more so (I would reckon us at the 90+ and 95+ percentiles). This wine had the lightest corkiness on the nose I've ever experienced and none on the palate. Very floral in the nose (only occasionally showing TCA) with dark fruits and a silky palate. At pristine bottle should be 94 or more. Cellared since original release.

  • Blind tasting, red wine flight 3 wine #5. Wine was decanted for 2+ hours before serving. Clear bright ruby with slight brick red rims.
Lifted elegant nose with fresh and primary fruits along with tar, smoke and dried cherry.
Nice robust entry with lots of primary fruits flavours and still young, fresh and fleshy, exhibits sour cherry, dried plum and hints of tar and smoke. Elegant and balance on palate with a solid structure to continue to age. Long finish with fine and chewy tannins. Very well integrated.

  • Decanted 1-2 hours. Dark crimson. Still very young, tannins still prominent, good base of fruit but should have left longer.

  • Summertime Weekend; 6/2/2012-6/3/2012: This wine is only beginning to come out of its shell and show its stuff, but it was fun to drink it at this early point in its long life. Also, this is a very traditional Barolo, smelling and tasting like its been made the same way for a hundred years, which I love. Its an auburn-red color in the glass. Initially, the wine just reeked of menthol, but some time in the decanter opened up some sour cherry, mushroom soup and rose petal aromas. The aromas shifted and evolved dramatically, at times showing a dead ringer for cherry Swisher Sweet tobacco, then olives, then bacon fat. On the palate, believe it or not, I actually found the wine to be quite sexy. Firm tannins, obviously, and strong acid, but it maintains a subtle mystique to it. Sour currant fruit is backed up by mushroom, beef and dried flowers. This is a really savory wine that would go so well with lamb or beef. I'd love to taste this in another ten years and see those secondary flavors.

  • Wines From Barolo and Barbaresco (Barolo): Talking about tight… certainly the least revealing aromatically of the three wines. Lightest color and extraction of the three, very pretty and transparent, very pure red cherry notes and pretty white flowers. Definitely some spice in there but the most feminine of the three aromatically. On the palate a very firm and slightly pitchy acidic ascent into a tight and powerful midpalate that has plenty of substance. A firm, but smooth transition into a very firm rather than chalky or grippy tannin finish that lasts for about 20-30 seconds. Very balanced wine though is on the firm side, adequate length and good intensity… not showing a lot of complexity now. Fantastic finesse and texture. Extremely traditional wine. If you are expecting this wine to be a fleshy and generous style of Barolo you will be sorely disappointed… it is from Castiglione (known for having very firm and tannic wines), is from the Villero vineyard (known for being more structured and firm than other Castiglione wines, is from one of the most traditional producers in Barolo (meaning a more tannic wine), and is from 2001 vintage (a vintage known to produce wines of very firm tannic structure)… the wine defines firmness in acidity and tannin on the palate. Hold for 5 to 10 before trying again, will age for decades.

  • Elegant and refined. No big Barolo bite here. Tannins are smooth and easy. Clean cherry and strawberry with a hint of mushroom. Classy.
