Pnp. Plum and raspberry. Savory briney finish. Wow that was unexpected! This is a rocks syrah this time around, hailing form “river rock vineyard”. A huge departure from the 2013 Clifton hill vineyard. An insane value and drinking perfectly right now. Really great! Might be the only vintage from the vineyard with 2015 on coming from Boushey?

This bottle was Definitley one to age until now. Deep color with a little orange on the edges from the aging. Robus wine that would easily pair great with grilled meats or a pizza from a brick oven. Notes of cigar box, black olive; meaty texture with a well balanced acidity. Could probably age another year or two with the body it has now but it is Definitley drinking on point today.

Color/App: moderately-deep (though just translucent) ruby core -> slightly diffuse rim with some bricking; moderate+ viscosity. Bouquet on PnP of black cherries, kalamata olives, redcurrant and a touch of anisette. Palate of blueberries and plums, kirsch and olives. Acidity acceptable with a medium-length finish. Didn't strike me as overly complex and I don't really see this improving much from where it is now, though it will probably steam ahead like this for another 2-5 years. Good for the very reasonable price it was sold at; I'll score it a 90 leaning into the QPR.

Decanted three hours. Black olive, charcuterie, herbal funk, oyster shell, sweet plum. Smells great. Black and purple fruits lead on the palate, its gamey with olive, asphalt and a faint smokiness at the finish. Tannins have receded, lingers nicely. Great value.

One of the best Syrahs we have ever had, although some might not appreciate the more robust style, which is tempered with elegance and smoothness. At 14% not an alcohol bomb and not a fruit bomb, although the style is fruit forward. Would stand up to spicier dishes and grilled meat. Taste of licorice, cigar box and meat along with the darkest cherries imaginable. Bottle is heavier weight than most. We let it breathe all afternoon and it still opened up as the night went on which leads us to say this most certainly has some good years left on it.

A gamy and spicy oak nose is followed by full and dark cherry fruit, minerals, and chewy soft ripe tannins driven with purpose by the acidity across the palate. The savory finish is lengthened by undulating waves of pepper and spice.
There's plenty of fruit here, yet the overall delivery is firmly framed by the structure and energy with the savory fruit always nearby but not assertive at this point. Age could improve the score, it's got the bones. Decanted for 1 hour.

Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, macerated for 43 days. Aged for 22 months in French oak puncheons (30% new). 14% alcohol, 5,7 g/l acidity, pH 3,97. Tasted half-blind.
Quite dense, dark-toned and almost fully opaque black cherry color with a hint of developed maroon hue. Ripe and very meaty nose with savory aromas of game and crisp, greasy bacon, some dark plummy tones, a little bit of inky character, light woody notes of savory oak spice, a hint of sweet blueberry and a slightly reductive touch of green pickle character. The wine is dense, concentrated and chewy on the palate with full body and very savory flavors of gamey meat, some savory woody spice, a little bit of crushed peppercorns, light plum liqueur tones, a hint of licorice and a touch of gravelly minerality. Overall the wine is bold and quite intense in taste, only all about non-fruit flavors. The acidity feels moderately high, keeping the wine from coming across as too heavy, yet feeling surprisingly soft and mellow at the same time. The tannins are ample, but also very ripe and gentle, contributing more to the chewy texture than to the structure. The finish is ripe, rich and textural with savory flavors of gravelly minerality, some inky tones, a little bit of gamey meat, light brambly notes of blackberries, a hint of savory woody spice and a touch of peppercorns.
A very dense, powerful and serious new world Syrah that very unlike its French counterparts (this became quite obvious, since the wine was tasted half-blind among Northern Rhône reds). The style here shows much more ripeness and darker-toned overall character than Northern Rhône Syrah, but unlike the somewhat sweeter-toned 2013 vintage of MCK, this wine is a far cry from those soft, fruity and even jammy new world Syrah (/Shiraz) wines. This savory wine showcases wonderfully that gamey and very mineral-driven Washington Syrah style that shows remarkable concentration and sense of weight, yet surprisingly little actual fruit flavors. It is starting to exhibit the first signs of age, but the overall feel is still quite youthful so I can imagine the wine benefiting from further aging. Perhaps a bit on the pricey side at 38€, but not prohibitively so.

Nose: Warm, fragrant blueberry and ripe plum. Baking spices and white pepper on the back end. Well projected, if not explosive or necessarily long lasting.
Mouth: Big, ripe blueberry is smoothly integrated with soft plum notes and a subtle smoke leading into a nice light finish of nutmeg and oak. Mouthfeel is silk and all of the pieces have melded nicely together.
Overall: Not a massive Syrah, but one that's ample and smooth. A complete package with lovely balance and texture - thorough with nice bouts of complexity that make it a great choice at the price point. 4 years have been good to it as well. 100% Syrah.

Smells great - cut flowers, black cherry, bitter chocolate and coffee. Smells rich but not at all heavy. Starts with plums and black cherry on the palate, there's a subtle briney olive note in the background, and with air time evolves to smoke and burnt ends. Caramel lingers. Soft, refined tannins. It's gains weight with air time too but it never feels heavy.

Nice big Syrah, opened it next to a super jammy zin and it made the MCK almost tame. If there was one flaw, it had just a little bitterness between the mid palate and the finish. Hard to really nail down, it either needed a little more time for the integration or it was beginning to separate a bit. I still enjoyed it.

Slow o'ed for about 2 hours and then 30 minutes in the glass. Was not feeling this wine from the outset. Generic nose of ripe/roasted fruit and a really weird aroma of the inside of a pill bottle. The palate had some decent savory characteristics but unfortunately were overshadowed by overt fruit. Not sure why the wine didn't do it for me as I've enjoyed this bottle many times from Charles Smith in the past. Hope my two other bottles perform better. 87pts.

PnP last night; finished tonite. Middling for an MCK - and a far cry from the brilliance of the 2013 - make this vintage a pass IMO. If this were rightly priced around 25-30 I could understand the hype ... but at 35 bones, it's punching below its weight class. While still a pretty nice wine in a vacuum: knowing its pedigree, I consider this offering to be a slight miss.

Pow! Flavor bomb! Flint, wet summer road, sandalwood, charred meat covering black berries, cooked plum. Still tightly wound, with pronounced tannins, which should give way to fruit as this settles down a bit. Would go well with grilled meats, strong cheeses, even a salmon steak, marinated in soy and sugar, over an open flame.

The 2014 edition of MCK is exactly what I expect from a WA state Syrah in this price range. Not particularly complex however what it does it does very well. Somewhat bold and muscular but not as much as Cattle King, The Hidden, or some of the other big K Vintners Syrahs. This one features dark, black fruit, Chinese 5 spice, and some charcoal ash notes on the finish. Will definitely buy again.

Double decanted and poured. Lacks the oomph of past MCKs but a well put together wine. A more subtle, nuanced kitty -- not exactly what I'm looking for here, but tasty.
New World, modern style Syrah. Bold fruit, mild spice and a judicious use of wood (not too much mind you...) so I like it. Since it's from Washington, the ABV is a reasonable 14%, so it's not trying to get in your face like a high octane bottle from Paso. All in all pretty good.
