Echezeaux Extravaganza: Fully mature example of the master. This was just a bit more evolved than the pair of 89s. Had a lot of the tertiary elements to make it interesting. Wonderful

WOTN against some 83 DRC and Vogüe. This was classic and textbook Jayer. Super clean and pure red fruit. Very high toned in nature. Lots of minerality and balance to this wine. Light yet powerful. A perfectly aged Burg that has plenty of life left. A real treat.

WTF impromtu event (Wine Vault): This was quite ready from the time we pulled the cork but did improve in the glass. What would otherwise have been a star in its own right was eclipsed by the 89 and 91 Cros P today.

There’s a wisp of smoke that runs through the wine as it breathes and it really is a lovely drink of good complexity and texture. It is sweet and meaty and the length of flavour is admirable.

An incredibly rare bottle pulled out at the end of a great evening. Fully mature, light color with some brown at the edge. Hauntingly perfumed nose that defies the characterization of individual components except for a definite scent of forest undergrowth. All I can say is that this evoked the visceral emotion that only complex old Burgundy can stir. Gently sweet, spicy, delicate wine at first, it did show a more astringent, blackberry side about an hour after opening. I am in awe of having had a chance to taste this legend, which far surpassed the vast majority of '83s I was fortunate enough to try long ago. Nevertheless, objectively, there is nothing to be gained by holding any remaining bottles as this was at its best right out of the bottle.

Echezeaux Extravaganza: Henri Jayer and DRC 1976-2007 (La Grenouille, New York): Perfect balance. Structured wine with great depth of complex fruit. Black cherries stand out. Gorgeous

Didn't show as well as the La Tache 83 that night. Although I have had a better bottle on another occasion.
