Best after 30 mins in the decanter. Very rustic, old school, but in a great way. Still some tannic presence and good red fruits, with iron, spice, and blood notes. Good finish - this can probably go a few more years no problem.

This last bottle in my case really went all out to present beauty in the bottle. Nose of roses and tea and a bit of tar -- gorgeous. The palate is jammed packed with flavor: the fruit is just huge and chewy and earthy. Tannins come in and just carry on for minutes. Still could probably go on for some years, though I think this last bottle of mine couldn't have been drunk at a better time.

Consistent with the bottle last year -- just such a well-done traditional barolo. See my previous notes. I'm going to drink up this year, because even though there is no real sign of getting over the hill, it may be reaching it peak.

Marcarini Brunate vertical (Chicago, IL): This suffers slightly from the vintage, in that there's a ripeness here that doesn't seem to be aging well -- there's a slight brownness that seems to be emerging on the palate. The fruit's a bit softer and this wine clearly doesn't have as much sturdiness as the 2001. There's some earthy tones on the palate as well, and while it's not funky, it also doesn't come across as a perfectly clean wine.

Still structured and bold after all these years, but then again what do we expect from a Barolo of this magnitude? Strong earth and mushrooms on the nose, with a lightly fruity mid-palette and a generous acidity on the finish. It cut through a butter-basted ribeye with ease.

Root Day - Stunning!! Mahogany/orange rim - explosive nose of Tar and Roses. Velvet (with just a touch of roughness from the remaining tannins) on the palate. Dried red fruit (and the roses/floral element) on the palate. There was a touch of leather but more Umami than anything else. Could not have been a better example to show a mature Barolo. Had to remove it from the 'which wine is your favourite' in order to get a sense of the official wines of the tasting.

Excellent wine. Flavor profile was all over barolo. Earthy forest floor mushrooms with a bit of background creosote. Rustic despite their reputation as a modern Barolo producer. Tertiary fruit flavors just beginning to push out from the back with some cherry that is neither tart nor sweet, but bright. I bought this just after it was released, probably in 2003. I had never bought Barolo before because it was supposed to age for 30 years and I was impatient, but when WS rated the 2000 vintage as 100 points, I decided to pick up a case or two of orphan bottles a local wine shop was selling. I have not regretted a single on of them This is the last of my 4 or so 750s and a few 375s of theMarcarini. I wish I had picked up more. I might have one more 375 left. I'll save it until its 20th birthday and hope the small bottle holds up.
They use "medium sized" barrels (their term - 20-40 hls) rather than barriques. This may explain the rustic presentation and it certainly has no oaky notes.

From a 375. Pop, decant and pour. Enough sediment to justify the decant through a screen. Color is a bit on the light side; what you would expect from a 14+ year old barolo. Zalto universal glasses. An excellent wine. Brooding dark red cherry, nebbiolo road tar/creosote, a bit of forest floor.Violet on the nose. I think this wine is still on the upswing. There is a bit of tannin still left and my guess is at least 4 more years to peak. I have gone through a couple of 375s and two 750s of this over the past 6-8 years and it keeps getting better. I have one 750 left. I don't remember exactly what these cost when I got these in about 2004, but I think the 750s were about $30. Worth the wait since I know where they've been for the past decade.

Has evolved nicely. More tar on the nose with some floral background and fragrant nebbiolo fruit. Dark fruit flavor and chewiness on the palate with great balance and acidity. Medium tannins extend the flavors for a long finish.

Chicago Italian Lovers round 6-2000 Barolos redux (Briciola, Chicago IL): Nose: This was pretty tight over the course of several hours with red cherries, red florals, tar, roasted herbs, spice notes, and red fruits. The complexity was there, it just wasn't giving up too much until later.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and youthful tannins. The acidity isn't too strong, but the tannins are making the youth of the wine shown. There is a warmth to the tones of red cherries, red florals, tar, spices, and red fruits.
Overall: I didn't have the chance to decant this for as long as it needed. It started to open up towards the end of the dinner and by that point it had been open for 4-5 hours. It still showed real class and elegance with a warmth to the tones.

Slow oxed 6 hours, then decanted for 1 hour. Had alongside a stellar 01 Kirwan and an 00 Chevillon Perrieres, this suffered a bit in comparison. Classic Barolo in all respects, this had that 2000 vintage ease that, while open knit and forward, lacked some heft and cut. Can't tell if the vagueness is from the companion wines, needing a bit more time, or just plain lacked some verve - from the vintage or this specific bottle. Very enjoyable, but somewhat ill-defined. Am I nit picking? Probably.

Light tar and roses on the nose. Lots of tartness and big tannins behind the chewy, tarry rich dark fruit. Seems a little younger than the one I tasted a half year ago. Definitely still young and needs years to maturity. May eventually get in the neighborhood of 95 or so.

Drank this now due to a Decanter article that said '00 was vastly overrated and fading - but this was excellent - med deep mahogany with a very nice, correct nose of tar, camphor, roses, licorice - smooth, balanced palate with very good length, very good acidity and just enough ripe tannin to provide backbone - will revisit in a couple of hours, hoping for even more. Three hours later...nose about the same except it has picked up an added dimension - a stewed cherry/menthol note, more high-toned - and a bit more wood influence - palate is broader, with some interesting matchstick and cardamom highlights - this is much more interesting than I would've thought for the vintage.

30 minute decant: Lot's of bricking in the glass. Looks like it has some age on it.
Nose has lots of sweet tobacco, floral elements, dark blackberry, some spice.
The palate starts out soft and full on the start and with good fruit. This moves to some good medium tannins with a nice finish. Good acidity. Nice balance. Would buy again.

Served in a flight of 2000 Barolos as part of an Italian tasting menu. Decanted for 4 hours. Paired with a classic osso buco prepared according to a Todd English reciple. Osso buco was served over garlic mashed potatoes. The wine I found to be the most disappointing of the evening. It wasn't bad, but just feel flat. Very tannic out of the bottle, but the tannins did mellow after several hours of decanting. Still, it didn't hold up to the food well for some reason. I didn't love the nose which was more medicinal than I would prefer or expect from Barolo. Nobody went back for more of this wine.
