Drinking very well now. Nicely integrated tannins contribute to a smooth, earthy/fruit taste with a nice finish. Enjoyed with venison steak and vegetables.

Exceptional Washington state producer. This cab is more red fruit forward than black fruit. Some black cherry, red currant, good amount of oak, and a touch a minerality. This wine needs a nice steak to fully enjoy. 91 points.

Fabulous tasting wine! A bit of black pepper and tobacco, dark fruit and a smooth but slightly tannic finish. Followed a 2005 Monbousquet and bravely held it’s own.

90 minute decant. Vibrant dark raspberry aromas with notes of black pepper and Maraschino cherry along with an underpinning of dark oak. Red plum, raw meat, mace, allspice, bitter nutmeg ride over brooding raspberry on the plate. Strong oak finish with chewy tannins, blue fruits, and white pepper. The tannins seem to indicate this could be held longer if desired.

Not rating this as the bottle seemed… off. Perhaps poor storage conditions at the shop it was purchased(?). Will likely open my other bottle soon and hope for better.

Hour decant. Nose of red raspberry, kirsch, and meaty aromas. Black cherry and graphite palate has some peppery energy to it, adding roasted red pepper and rocky notes. Finish brings cast iron, black fruits, clay, black plum, and dry, leathery tannins.

Superb. Two hour decant then drank over two hours. Subtle nose but then round, mint, dark fruits, minerality, and excellent mouthfeel with a tumbling finish that goes for days. Really like this.

Rustic black raspberry and black plum aromas with bay leaf and a charcoal note. Dark black fruit palate with tar, iron ore, dried time, and schist. Leathery tannins lead teh finish, adding blackberry, coffee grounds, fleshy red plum, and bell pepper notes. This wine's in an excellent place right now.

Decanted for a couple of hours before drinking. A little lighter in color (cool climate cab). Nose of red fruits, dried herbs. Did not taste like 14.5% ABV. Nice and approachable now but would benefit from a few more years in the bottle. Tannins not so pronounced. Wine fell a little short compared to the first Betz Pere we had a few months ago.
Winebid Betz Tasting. Held in the glass for 3 hours. Subtle nose - floral which was surprising. Also a chocolate hit. In the mouth, very earthy. Full mouth feel. Like the other wines in the tasting - very well made, clean. Early in the drinking window - many years to go. Has a pepper hit too. This may be my preference, but I slightly preferred the Syrahs in this tasting. Great wine but not as much character as the Syrahs.

Decanted for an hour and the aroma coming from the decanter was was lush yet strong. Black currant and black fruits mixed with cigar box was wonderful.
The palate was full and medium to full bodied. Nicely balanced and mouth coating. The dark fruits intertwined with the spices and minerals to make an enjoyable experience!

Waylaying any posts until my return to the frosty and snowy arena that is Illinois, comes the first review of a spectacular wine that was chosen during my visit to Scottsdale and my visit with my daughter and our time together. While not picked for its name “Père de Famille,” it is none-the-less apropos, as meaning “father of the family.” ME!
Strictly by chance, but being the impetus for this purchase, my daughter mentioned she had a wonderful Washington State wine recently and loved the characteristics. I too love Washington wines and on our trip to the local mega-wine shop I spotted the perfect wine
Betz “Père de Famille” Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Betz Family Winery ranks among the best that Washington has to offer, at least in my not-so-humble opinion, focusing on Syrah and Bordeaux styled wines. While designated as a Cabernet, its blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, and 4% Merlot planting it firmly in the Bordeaux style. The grapes coming from predominantly (83%) Red Mountain and 17% Yakima Valley produce a full-bodied and deeply structured wine. Dark rich black fruit combines with a slight mineral note along with subtle tannins to create this wonderfully balanced masterpiece; mentioning how the wine remains on your palate for minutes. Combining this fabulous wine with a perfectly prepared (by yours truly) Beef Tenderloin, started the visit off with a bang.
While enjoying a week’s worth of meals, there is one more review that will be forthcoming and will be a first for “Hi, it’s Don 4 Wine.” Stay tuned!
Cheers

Really enjoyed this, should have given 1 hour or more to decant. Nose of dark fruits, palate of herbs & a mouthfeel that was lighter earlier but became fuller as the bottle balanced itself the longer it was opened.

There is a good mineral and menthol quality to this medium bodied Cabernet. It definitely needs a long decanting but you can taste the future for this wine....

WOTN in a strong lineup including wines from Peter Michael, Cayuse, Abeja, The Walls and DuMol. Drinking beautifully now, PnP but will give the next bottle at least an hour in a decanter. Big, perfectly integrated, long compelling finish.

PHMG WAG: The Wine Club Tasting (The Lyon Club): A super wine with a noticeable change in terroir as we rolled through these wines. Almost jammy black fruit, subtle oak and earth linger like a teen at the mall (oh wait! What are malls?). Now-2025.

This was more immediately pleasurable than the H of H Cab. Multi-layer, nice fruit and very nice complexity. I can imagine this developing further with time. Will be hard to resist it early though.

Average, at best. Probably at peak drinking now, but just not great. Really "mid". Not a big wine, but also not light. Expected more.
