Great wine. Decanted and let breath for two hours. Blueberry nose and various berry flavors with a sour cranberry jumping out. I recommend pairing with a big steak if drinking now as it’s still predominantly young in characteristics. There’s lot of time to go on this…at least seven more years, likely 10+.

Dark Ruby red on the pour; semi-transparent in the glass. Fragrant nose of Blackberry, Cassis & some Cedar. Full-bodied, flavorful, yet not overly extracted. Blackberry, Red Currant and Chocolate notes on the palate. Smooth, nice mouth feel, yet tannins have a bit of a bite. A little mineral touch on the pleasant, lingering finish.

Superlative wine, rich, fruity with hints of tobacco and chocolate on the nose, and similar on the palate with stronger hints of chocolate smooth and with a long finish and very good body. Was terrific tonight with cheese enchiladas and coke slaw made with shredded broccoli.

Decanted and let breath for 2 1/2 hours. Drinkable now but best with food as structurally it is still coming together. Recommend if not drinking with food waiting a couple more years to soften and integrate. Dominant flavors of currants and other dark fruit with an earthy currant nose. Really nice wine that should be spectacular with more time aged the right way.

PNP followed over two days. Ripe black fruit, anise and cocoa. Full bodied, with slightly chewy tannins and enough acidity to stay fresh. It’s young, but giving pleasure now with minimal decant. Should be good for the next decade or more. Great value at $35.

If you ever have the occasion to look at a map of the Mount Veeder AVA, and look closely right smack dab in the middle of the whole kit and caboodle, you’ll find today’s winery and, as one might expect, the wine of today’s post:
Mount Veeder Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
At elevations of 1,000 to 1,600 feet in the Mayacamas Mountains, with a much more varied microclimate than that of the Napa Valley floor, comes this wine produced from Mount Veeder’s Winery Ranch Estate, one of 3 estate vineyards, farmed sustainably, and a mixture of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot. Further adding to the wine, are the 20 months it spends in oak to smooth and develop flavors within the wine.
It all starts with wonderful aromas emanating from the glass; the wine begins its journey as a medium-bodied wine with darker fruit notes and a touch of dried cherry. The tannins are rounded and soft, with a trace of earthiness that finishes with spice notes on a long finish.
For a Cabernet produced from mountain fruit, this wine represents a great value. For those looking for even bigger wines, they produce a Cabernet Franc and single vineyard Cabs and Bordeaux styles blends.
You get a whole bunch from this iconic winery that’s smack dab in the middle of Mount Veeder!
Cheers

Revisiting this with just a bit of time to settle and the wine has really come together. Cool blueberry, blackberry, loam and cedar ember on the nose. Excellent balance of ripe fruit and grippy tannin. The structure is excellent here, not one bit of pushed ripeness. Setting up to age really well.

This wine overachieves at the price point. PNP and served with our ranch raised beef. Coconut, smoke, plum and violet on the nose carries thru to the palate adding cherry, cedar and vanilla flavors. Full-bodied, focused, lively and vibrant, indicating that this wine will continue to cellar and mature for years to come.

Slowly opened up over the course of three hours, showing ripe plum and cassis supported by herbal notes and tobacco. Balanced acidity, and while tannins were lighter than expected, there is great structure overall. I’d think this will drink even better in a few years and is a stelllar value at $40.

Decanted three plus hours. Aromas of currants, cassis, vanilla, bay leaf and fennel seed. Full-bodied. Black fruit dominates the palate, with licorice qualities as well. Nicely balanced. Definitely needs a three or four hour decant if opening now, but better to wait until 2024+.

Red, garnet and clear. Nose: rose, dried cherry, touch of mocha, light cedar. Palate: med plus body, great mouth feel, dark fruit, vanilla, moderate oak, great acid, a lot of backbone and tannin that grabs the palate. Balanced and Well done. I mean for 35 bucks, you get a lot in the glass. I will be grabbing several for the cellar. Will drink amazing in 3+ years.Great value for any area much less Napa.

On the nose somewhat smoky, some chocolate, red and dark fruits. On the palate, Chocolate covered cherries , And a light smokiness on the perimeter and back. Full mouthfeel , very, very smooth, lovely long finish. Was wonderful with spaghetti and marinara sauce. 10/2/29 - very lovely with artichoke- ricotta tortellini, dressed with drizzled alfredo and pesto, bread and butter. Breathing in the bottle for 2 more days only took off the(tiny) remaining sharp edge.

Little disappointed with where this wine is now. Harsh and not the normal rounded fruit feel in the mouth. Maybe it will round out soon. Acidity a little high. Have last one in 2026 as 2016 vintage was a "98" in Napa
- Brick color with slow forming legs and aromas of dusty, blackberry, black currant, prune and cherry. It's balanced and has flavours of chocolate, blackberry and cherry with a full body. Round texture with a long finish - Dry finish.

Mouth: Crushed red plum and black cherry puree come through lightly plush on a lithe frame, arcing across the palate along a pronounced edge of star anise, garrique, and loam. A mix of slate and light cedar has the finish together with a bit of rose stem and a bevy of rough and tumble tannins.
Overall: Has personality but keeps an intense edge, leaning the slightly more aggressive, classic end of the Napa spectrum. There's a feeling of balance waiting in the wings, once the edge comes off. In the coming 2-3 years this will benefit from additional meld and show as a very solid value. 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot. Drink 2023-2036.

Somewhat disappointing as a big fan of Napa mountain cabs overall. Lack of mountain fruit, not as full bodied as you would expect. Seems somewhat of a commercial type of wine compared to competitors which are usually a bit higher priced but much better quality.
Nose: Nice herbal cabernet nose of mint, sage and blackberry. Turned earth and black cherry. Palalte: Very smooth entry and lots of black fruit. Good tobacco and herb notes.
Solid drinker that was best on PNP.

Brown sugar and baking spice nose, later developing into more of a classic Bordeaux nose of tobacco and earthy funk. Texture is very, very nice. Restrained but powerful. Seemed to get more tannic after being in the decanter but might have been palate fatigue. Good value at retail; reminded me of a baby Montalena estate cab for a fraction of the price.

Nose: Slight dark red fruits, deep earth, soft dusting of cocoa powder, slight vanilla and light oak/heat. With all that said though, the nose is rather light.
Palate: Fruits are brighter and juicier on the palate, similar oak with some minerality and a very slight spice on the end (could be heat as well).
Medium Ruby on the slightly darker side. Dry with lowamounts of smooth, soft tannins. Medium-minus body with light-plus acidity. Decent finish of about 5-6 seconds. There's something flat about this that I can't put my finger on. There is dullness to the oak on the mid-palate to the finish and the minerality doesn't help it at all. I've had 3 glasses to make sure I'm not missing something. Could be just my bottle but I don't think so. I do not mean to be rude nor disrespectful here but I don't want to finish the bottle.

A young cab from Napa rated 90 points by JD and 93 points by JS. I've enjoyed previous vintages from this producer and wanted to explore purchasing some additional bottles. Slow ox for an hour and a half and consumed over the following three hours. Deep purple in the glass. Fragrant nose of dark fruits, violets and earth. Flavors included dark chocolate, cherry, plum, tobacco and blackcurrants. Medium mouthfeel that was concentrated, round and rich. Very nicely balanced for such a young red, revealing an appealing, velvety almost silky texture ending with a moderately long finish. What struck me most was how approachable this wine is in its' youth while expecting cellaring for several years to add complexity and probably some secondary notes. Excellent QPR!
