Intens men lettdrikkelig. Veldig lang. Herlig!

  • It was my last bottle of 2013 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon. The developing Loire Chenin Blanc was clear and pale lemon in colour without any sediments. Inviting aromatics of honeycrisp apple, quince and melon were accompanied by lanolin, smoke and wet stone minerality.

The mouthfeel was off-dry and medium-full-bodied. The flavour intensity and the touch of sweetness were balanced by high level of piquant acidity. Flavours of ripe red apples, candied lemon zest, honeysuckle blossom and a core of saline minerality persisted in a long remarkable finish. The alcohol level was at 13%.

According to the winery website, the vines were grown on a slope with southern exposure, on soil composed of schist and sandstone over silica-rich volcanic rocks (rhyolite). The vineyard was four hectares, and the average vine age was 35 years old. Entire bunches of grapes were slowly pressed prior to fermentation. The wine was aged in stainless steel vats for nine months sur lie.

  • 2013 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon was complex, intense and lingering. The developing Chenin Blanc was clear and pale lemon in colour, with aromatics of green apples, quince, melon, pineapples and lemon zest, followed by complexities of honey, stony minerals and wet wool. On the palate, it was off-dry and rather full-bodied, with the high intensity balanced by rather high level of acidity. Flavours of honeysuckle, blossoms, minerals, green and red apples lingered in a long satisfying finish.
Savennières is a 146-hectare appellation in the Anjou-Saumur region on the north bank of the Loire river, devoted exclusively to Chenin Blanc. Vines are planted on south-east facing slate and limestone slope. Circulation of air from the Loire river prevented the growth of noble rot in the region, so dry or slightly off-dry still white wines are made. In addition to the complexity and intensity, I love its flexibility in ageing that it could be consumed now or fifteen years later.

  • 2013 Domaine Des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon was evolving, minerally, honeyed and citrus. The Loire Chenin Blanc was clear and light lemon in colour. The nose was packed with gunflint and stony minerals freshly opened. Two hours of decanting was necessary to reveal its true characters of lemon, jasmine, white pepper, honey and melon. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and dry, complemented with refreshing high level of acidity. Subtle spiciness, stony minerals and pear were prominent in the long captivating finish.

  • Tasted at Summerhill LCBO
2013 Domaine des Baumard Savenniere Close du Papillon was clear pale golden in colour, with intriguing nose of smoky gunflint, grapefruit and a touch of enhancing bell pepper. The Chenin Blanc was medium-bodied, slightly off-dry, intensely flavoured with balancing high acidity and long mineral flinty finish. (93)

  • Excellent overall. Nice fruit acidity minerality and something extra, perhaps lees extract or oak but quite unique. Still a young wine.
