Sneaky good. I mean like John Turturro as Emilio the Butler in Deeds “sneaky, sneaky” good. Subtle in its approach, but with deliberate and thoughtful contemplation this shows wonderfully mature and nuanced dried red fruits, damp earth and silky texture. A terrific glass of wine to help soothe the soul.

La Paulee Warm up Lunch (The Boulevard): A bit shy in the nose but opens to reveal mature black cherry with some meaty spice. The palate has meaty black cherry. There is still plenty of power and oomph here, but lacks some focus and refinement.

Eric brought to late dinner at 大班慺. Really quite lovely. Expressive secondary flavours of damp forest and spice. None of the vintage's typical harsh tannins. Drinking very well now.

I was torn between a 88 or 90 with the 90s ripe pretty strawberry fruits winning me over although there was a string of stemmy leafiness. But realising the maker, it made sense that a riper sweeter cutesy style of Pinot fruit was expected from this domaine. But very attractive delicious wine with some haw flakes, stewed cutesy pretty floral scented strawberries. Delectable wine.

December Birthdays (My Little Spanish Place): Like many 1988s, this was just starting to come into its own and was quite excellent indeed. It had a beautiful nose - very aged, complex and mellow. It requires attention, but it certainly rewarded it with subtle, intriguing notes of damp earth, stony minerality, dark cherry and sour plum fruit at the base, and then rather high-toned notes of slightly dried strawberries, the lightest hint of violets, tobacco leaf and sweet spice emerging over time. All subtly lovely. It was the palate that really wowed me though. Beautifully structured yet wonderfully resolved, this somehow had both a firm background and yet a wonderfully silky foreground that left just the slightest a hint of a previous sternness. I also loved the delicious flavours of dark cherries and plums that were warm, rich and mouthfilling, yet wonderfully fresh and balanced as they glided across the mouth into a finish with a delicious lick of woody spice, earth and cigar smoke. Beautiful stuff that is just starting to drink at peak.

Grumset, noe bunnfall, dyp rødlig mot oransje. Intens, deilig, moden pinotnese. Relativt ungdommelig, mild og leskende, god syre. Endel, men velintegrert tannin. Smud munnfølelse, men litt snau i lengden.

Flott friskhet. Lang ettersmak.

This Clos de la Roche was a bit of a disappointment, in that I was anticipating something much better. High fill level in the bottle. Medium dark colour - soft ruby, with an amber rim; aromas showed dark berry fruit - cherry, with even some black raspberry, bordered by a frame of smoky oak; on the palate it was fairly full, with the fruit woven through marked soft, yet a bit heavy, tannins that carried on to the finish. As the finish ended, there was a slightly sweet close. I was looking for more ripe fruit in the aromas and also the flavours, which were marred by the heaviness of the tannins. From a reasonably good vintage, it just didn't sing - falling somewhat flat. This one really missed the mark on the terroir score, as it seemed to come off as a Burgundy without a sense of place, expressing much more of the winemaker's craft.

La Paulée de San Francisco - Warmup Lunch with Friends (Boulevard - San Francisco CA): Meaty with black fruit, lots of animale. Plenty of rough edges. Good overall, but not as good as previous bottles.

Twelfth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Late night, brief note. Bottle in perfect condition, popped and poured. Spice and fully mature red cherry aromas with dollop of earth. Similar flavors, just slightly less intense.
