Gorgeous and intense aromas of dense red cherry with oodles of stem-spice and florals. Palate is similarly intense with layers of rich, vibrant cherry fruit. Certainly a touch stylized, but delicious from start to finish. In an early peak drinking window.

French >$150 theme: Spicy dark red fruit was immediately apparent, guessed Vosne but when revealed to be Volnay I thought could only be Bouley since the other seminal producers of Volnay would have been more backward. Nevertheless, agree with previous notes that this wasn't fully open and would benefit from more cellar time to round out the rough edges.

Was thinking of pulling the trigger on more of this as new vintages are getting quite expensive. Thankfully decided to pop one from the stash first for evaluation. Quality not nearly matching the hype tonight. Lean, cranberry, disjointed. OK mid level Volnay. Perfume maybe best aspect but palate is shut. Maybe will come around but who needs the risk. So many other good 17s out there.

HDH auction at avec River North (Chicago, IL): Nothing like my previous experience. Completely shut down; showing only tannin. This was double decanted a few hours just before and I was told it was drinking quite nicely then, but like the 2005s today, this really just shut down hard.

Nose of red fruit with earthy spices, , some residual oak as well. The palate is great, not diluted at all, dense and compact, lots of fruit, precise. This is elegant now but should be kept till 2027. Fabulous, upside from here.

Sunday hangout (and goodbyes) (Chicago, IL): An excellent bottle of young Volnay that shows a medium- to long-term aging potential. The nose is delicate and fresh, with a modest amount of spice, but plenty of those high-toned red fruit notes that are in vogue these days. The palate is a little angular owing to its youthful tannins, but is very consistent with the nose.

Clos des Chenes is always dense, and backward, but here the Bouley managed to avoid heavy extractions. Typical nose of Clos des Chenes, plums, licorice, in the mouth dense, sweet and gently grippy in the end. Very well made.

The Verticals Tasting at 2023 La Paulée (Eventi Hotel, New York): Fragrant, fine nose. Light red fruit, no wood. A delightful wisp of a wine with great purity and a light vein of soil.
