Nose: rose petals, spices, mature strawberry, cherry Notes: tasted in Beaune. My second time drinking this bottle within 2 months and this one is showing much better than the one. Pataille is a maker that can defy appellations, making what it seems to be a lesser appellation into something that is much more complicated and fine than the original appellation. This has an excellent nose and almost certain that this is probably the best Marsannay there is available. Still in its youth and we can start enjoying this in 2-3 years. Drink: 2027+ Rating: 91

Nose: red cherry, rose, red fruits Notes: very elegant and gentle red. This Marssany is quite promising as it boasts a good integration of floral notes and red fruits. Probably not a surprising thing for the vintage but it is ready and drinking perfectly now. Being well known for its natural winemaking approach I see plenty of talent here from this wonderful bottle of Clos du Roy. This probably is one of the better bottles I've had from this appellation. Nose rather muted but more open on the taste which opens with ripe cherries and white pepper and also beginning to show some earthy elements. In a good space now but would benefit from 2-3 years additional cellaring.

At the beginning of its drinking window. This could hold its own with a lot of village wines from farther south in the cote de nuits, so a good value in that sense. But I also dont feel like there is anything particularly special about this wine.

A dark ruby red color. Some signs of age. On the nose this burst with fresh summer red berries and crushed cranberry notes combined with floral and some secondary savory spice. A bit of earth and barnyard as well. On the palate, consistency fruit notes of red and blue berries. Spice. A bit less complex and impressive than the nose but with good structure, lifting acidity and balance. A sappy and fresh midpalate with a long and lingering mineral and fruit driven finish. Wonderful.

Saturday Afternoon Closeout Tasting (Chicago Wine Consulting - Glenview IL): Ripe black cherry and berry with good enough weight, great balance for near-term enjoyment. Clear meatiness shows the Gevrey character that comes with the best wines from Marsannay. Tasted in the afternoon, then the bottle was finished with dinner.

Lovely open nose of dark raspberry liqueur, a slightly savoury spicy note, even a touch of tobacco. Very primary and young, a touch of CO2, gorgeous fruit, sweet tasting, with a nicely bitter mid palate through to a long finish. This is lovely now, but very young and primary, a great start to this case and 2017 Pataille. Excellent

Bright ruby red with tones of purple. Still very young looking. The nose is beautiful and precise with ripe and fresh red fruits - cherry, cranberry, pomegranate, but then with a undertone of spice and earth notes. On the palate, medium bodied, with ripe red fruits, ripe tannins that are quite high but balanced by the fruit and acidity. A little green/herbal notes that is slightly astringent (maybe from whole cluster?), but this I think will soften with age (and already has as the bottle has opened). Great mineral core. Better with food I think. Really good stuff, and while delicious now, this needs some time to show it’s potential.

Bright ruby color, medium plus intensity with flavors of perfectly ripe red cherry, cranberry, tart raspberry and pomegranate, robust earthiness, wet leaves and a nice minerality. Fresh with slightly dried herbal and savory characteristics. Balanced acidity and tannins, smooth and silky texture with a relatively short finish.

This is a very accomplished vintage for the domaine. Purple fruit so pure and delightful, extracted cherry, matchstick, cigar-like smoke, pure arry of violet florals, chamomile tea, lemon acidity, elegant and meaty like Chambolle. Notable stem at first, fading away after air. Light and grippy on the palate, superbly deep heat. 92-93

Pretty nose with spice and cherry. The whole cluster is noticeable but, even at this stage, not too much. Seems like a strong vintage for this as it’s a step above other Pataille wines I’ve had (mainly from 2014 and 2015). Really good.

Fruits noirs, bleuets presque, terreux au nez comme en bouche, un peu de verdeur presque et surtout de l’acidité et une minéralité presqu’intense, c’est très bien mais a besoin de temps je pense. 89-90

I seem to be in the minority here as I didn’t get much out of this. Maybe it was me who was not in the right mood. No detailed notes but very savoury, cherry, strawberry and black tea, a little stemmy and not the fresh and clean Pinot that I was hoping for. Just this time nothing to give it that extra interest to grip me. But not bad by any stretch. So no rating this time.

Best Clos du Roy (or Marsannay for that matter) that I've tasted. Very often the wines of the appellation - in the past - that I've tried, have shown mostly dark fruit and grippy structure, in a generally well done and decent style but just slightly monotonous; here you have some real pinot complexity in terms of sweet fruit, spice, wet soil as well as very great freshness.

Plum, strawberry, plenty of soil tones, and a wonderful savoriness from the 100% whole cluster yet no stemminess. Juicy, silky texture, lovely today offering early accessibility.

Expressive nose of blackberries, sweet spices, licorice, sandal wood. Well measured palate, elegant with good structure. Nice showing of this appellation, glad to see that the less famous places in Burg are doing better and better, making good QPR Pinots available. 92+

PNP into Chef & Sommelier glass (“Flower” day): Pale purplish ruby to the eyes.
Pronounced, highly detailed blueberry and black cassis fruits. Florals and some hints of smoke.
Minerality driven palate. Great transparency overall and indeed a very nice style to have!
