  • Medium ruby.

What an incredible nose, the best I have ever encountered. Super concentrated and pronounced. Incredibly well defined black currant supported by lovely cedar, graphite, cinnamon. Wow!

Palate as amazing as the nose - superb intensity. Lovely acidity. High but polished tannins. Medium plus body. Incredible finish.

Phenomenal wine. By far the wine of the tasting. Would love to taste again once mature.

  • A OUBLIER

  • 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Quite massive and actually a bit closed depth at the moment, but has its classic wonderful fruit of blackberries, blackcurrants, ripe raspberries, graphite, tight tobacco, bonfire, herbs and anise. Great touch that spreads into a captivating wine that seduces you and squeezes you to its chest with warm and sunny fruit of black currant, cassis, redder berries, matches, anise, cinnamon, tobacco and leather. Long dense and complex finish with tannins that are firm, but which give the idea of a long life in the cellar. A difficult Margaux right now, but which abounds for a long future.

  • Perfectly poised between opulent and refined, rich and elegant, this is a beautiful example of Chateau Margaux with intense notes of lilacs, violets, cigar box, red fruits and espresso. The palate has concentration, but there is also freshness and depth of flavor, so the silky textured wine is light on its feet and effortless to drink. The seamless finish provides great energy, soft, silky tannins and a gorgeous sense of purity to the fruit that does not want to quit. Made from a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, 14% ABV.

  • Bordeaux 2018 from bottle (Bordeaux and Strasbourg): I love the pristine aromas of cigar box, crushed mint and other kinds of fine herbs mingling with ripe red and black fruits. The overall impression is a wine very refined, full bodied and nuanced. The palate of this blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot displays power, with fine yet foreboding tannin leading to a long, precise finish. Tasted in early November and bottled on 18 September this year, this also is a powerful, tannic vintage. Indeed, in a Zoom call, director Philippe Bascaules agrees that the grand vin will need “10 years to soften up a bit”, and I recalled how he raised concern over hydric stress due to the lack of rain in the summer of 2018. He had said that he had “never seen” such water stress before in his career: Typically water stress affects younger vines, but in 2018 “even 15 year old vines were affected”, and it seems that the well-drained, gravely soils may have been the most susceptible. But the bottled wine – having aged in the usual 100% new oak – has freshness and is a great success of the vintage. The healthy pH of 3.64 pH and the alcohol clocking in at 13.9% makes for fine balance. “I am more comfortable with 13.9 for the first wine than the 14.4 for the Pavillon”, he said. Let’s see how it develops in 10 years. (97+) Full notes in wine-chronicles.com

  • Deep in color with an intense, dark ruby hue, the nose offers violets, lilacs, espresso, wet earth and cigar wrapper along with ripe, deep red fruits. There is freshness and soft, silky vibrant tannins. The wine feels quite powerful in the moment and its classic design reminds me of 2005. This is not going to be fun to taste young but with Chateau Margaux patience is always a virtue. Made from a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 14% alcohol. The Grand Vin was produced using only 36% of the harvest. Picking commenced September 17, finishing October 13. 97-99 Pts

  • Geproefd op Château Margaux op dinsdag 02.04.2019.
14% alcohol.
