Aromatics are astounding. Decanted but didn’t really need much, probably helped though but not essential. Classsic bordeaux nose but palette was predominately blueberries as well as your classic leather and cedar. Very good, others adored it, I enjoyed it but a little sweet for my palette.

Return to Napa; 3/6/2022-3/13/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): The reason people age wines. All of the ones at the tasting were really good but this just stepped up to another level entirely and honestly I don’t think it’s actually anywhere near peak yet. Soft and more integrated and more complex and just overall a really beautiful wine that makes you want to sit and contemplate. Great.

60 min in the glass, my final bottle. This was the strongest bottle yet. Full bodied wine with great balance and finish. Will be mistaken for old world. No rush to drink these but within the next couple of years is recommended.

Beautiful mature Napa Bordeaux blend from Sonoma. Honestly, one of the best Napa cabs I’ve had in many years. Tons of graphite, tar, asphalt, led pencil. A restrained wine for modern tastes but tertiary characteristics abound. Have 2 bottles left…don’t think they need to be consumed ASAP but fully mature and will likely drink mine over the next 2-5 years. Congrats Pierre..well done! You made your point to Jess Jackson with this beautiful wine!
This was really exceptionally good. Audozed for 6-7hrs. The nose was incredible, and so was the palate. A ton of graphite/pencil shavings, cassis, leather, some black fruit. Good balance. Blind I would have guessed Monte Bello with around 15-18yrs of age. Drinking very well now, if you like mature, somewhat restrained, Bdx blends. Confirms that the CA Cabs and Bdx blends I like best are those of cooler vintages, like ‘98.

Dark ox-blood in color, full bodied Pencil shavings, cigar box, black tea Silky smooth, luscious and soft. OMG, so damn good. Remnants of dark fruit, but now all tertiary flavors. Definitely needs to be consumed now. This wine is over the top good. Wish I had popped it a couple of years ago. Would never have guessed this was from Napa. Tastes like a premium aged Bordeaux. So damn good! I get why it's become expensive.
Smoked a Ashton VSG Torpedo.

Popped and poured but this needed an hour to open up. The primary fruit for the most part is overtaken by your typical pencil shavings and pepper. Overall good balance and certainly thinned out from 20 years in bottle. Purchased at the winery in July 2019. This is certainly in its prime and should be enjoyed this year. Slow decline has started. Overall a very enjoyable wine that deserves contemplation.

Green pepper, graphite, tobacco and leather on the nose. Lots of secondary aromas and flavors. Agree with others that this is more French than California. Incredibly well balanced and focused on the palate. Lengthy finish. A winner!

I have enjoyed this wine in the past. This bottle is off. Not sure how or why. The one thing I’d say is that the fruit was faded considerably. Hope that is an anomaly as I have one more on hold

Tasted at the winery. Beautiful and mature, slight bricking. As silky as any wine I've had the pleasure to drink. Fruit seemed very slightly faded next to a group of four younger Verites. An incredible accomplishment, especially for such a challenging vintage.

La Joie is truly pure joy. Vegetal and green on opening, reminiscent of Bordeaux and not so much California...or so it seemed. Incredible core of strawberry and cherry fruit, intense and powerful, infused with leather and tobacco. Tannins fully resolved, smooth as silk, providing an elegant structure that just wowed. The vegetal notes subsided after an hour, revealing progressive layers of sweetness and spice. First dark chocolate, then caramel and vanilla, laced with hints of black tea and cigar box. So warm on the finish, touch of cinnamon and spice, minute long, lingering. Absolutely incredible wine made by a true master, so luscious, round and complete. True heaven. Can't imagine this '98 getting any better, seems very much at its peak. Everything perfectly in place, tannins resolved, flavours in balance.

Tart cherry, leather, match box, lilies and dark mud. An almost acerbic acidic quality, yet enough soft tannins to balance everything out. Still holding in rather well and the secondary nuances definitely intrigue. A well-aged Cabernet character...similar to aged Montebello. Drink now - 2024.

Decanted and let breath a half hour. Still grew more complex and nuanced for the next half hour. Black cherry and a hint of pipe tobacco up front with light tannin evident. Not an old wine, but very balanced and with many herbaceous hints. Probably only a few more years before its peak years are over.

I bought this bottle from an auction house so I was holding my breath - god knows what type of storage condition this bottle had been in. Well, I received it in mint condition labelled "acquired from a private cellar". I was curious to find out what an old Verite would taste like. Nose of macerated berries, some tobacco. Tons of pleasure in mouth. Yet, if Dominus comes an inch close to old world, this one is a mile away. A nice effort from a French winemaker. Ready to drink.

I didn't decant this and I should have. This could use another 5-7 yrs in the cellar and that's will be the next time I open this up. Still a little tight and chewy. After it opened up in the glass it really started to come together. Big, dense, complex, well rounded. Just a standout. Long lingering finish. I love how the fruit was still present and big as life but you could taste some cedar, fig, mocha, and leather. Great.

Was very curious to try a mature vintage of Verite La Joie given the praise and number of perfect scores this producer has been getting from Parker since 2001 or so. Slow ox'ed for about two hours then decanted properly as it did not seemed open and drank over 3h. Dark garnet but slightly browning at the rim. Initially tastes much more like right bank with the Merlot coming through: plum and sweet red and dark fruitt. After about 1h in the decanter the Cab takes over with a much darker fruit profile. Licquorice.on the nose and some burned earth. The fruit on the palate is not as generous as you would expect, there is also a slight bitterness, burned notes and almost austerity on the palate with the dark fruit and those fine to medium tannins. Nice medium finish however. Somewhat disappointing. This is good but more like a good St. Julien a la Leoville Barton in a somewhat difficult vintage than the top Pauillac-like experience I was hoping for. This does not possess the elegance, balance or quality of fruit of say a 96 Pichon Baron. 90-91

You can tell the age of this but the nose is still so fresh and young. It is such an exciting and exquisite wine. Full of fresh fruit and youth. Black cherry, mocha, cassis and licorice. But depth with minerality and purity of the terroir. Just an exceptional wine. Almost perfect.

Wow - what an incredibly nice bottle of bottle of wine drinking magnificently at the moment. I am a strong believer in - when in doubt, buy French. This wine is the exception that proves the rule. Well balanced and integrated tannins. You can tell it it Californian but it is not up in your face about it. A brilliant drink today.

i Decanted the wine for about 1 1/2 hours. From the moment I opened the wine, the Verite had great body and nose. My inital taste was full of subtle fruit, hint of current and smooth tannins a bit of vanilla. As the wine opened the taste and finish were superb. We paired the food with a steak and tomato tart, excellent choice.
The wine seems at it's peak and may age for a few more years, but I would open now or in the next 12 months. I was very impressed by this varital of Verite.
Enjoy.

--- COLOR: Deep garnet with garnet-brick rim NOTE: This is an old soldier to be sure, but it has retained its dignity. The nose is mostly cherry pipe tobacco, leather, a hint of black licorice and ash, then some red cherry preserves underneath. The mouth is nice, rich and round with a greater expression of red cherry fruit, from fresh to candied, and the tobacco/leather/licorice elements recede to the background along with some crackled dried leaf. Very interesting. Almost opulent. The finish provides a balance between the fruit and secondary flavors almost perfectly. That dried leaf element tells me this has seen better days. I wasn't expecting much from this bottle and I was definitely surprised. Only a hint of heat on the finish. Otherwise, this was in good shape. Drink soon and with someone you love.
