Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Easter Edition 2024 (Asperg): Tasted blind blind. Needs a lot of time and air to unfold. At first nervous and a bit unbalanced. After a quick decant it showed its true beauty. Fine fruit, fresh herbs, elegant, mineral and very dense and deep. Oak is beautifully integrated. Good length. Solid upscale potential. 92-93+

Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): Typical aromatics of matchstick reduction. This wine is firing on all gears (1) purity of fruit (2) acid (3) structure / depth are all present and in harmony here. The 16 vintage for whites is a strange one. When they hit, they hit.

WJL Birthday @ Noreetuh: Characteristically BV - a big wine with broad shoulders. Classical Meursault richness. Pronounced acidity keeps the wine in balance. Shows some weakness of the vintage, but will surely keep for years.

The Bernard Boisson Vadot bottlings are all so good. I think the kids are not yet matching the quality of Bernard. Even the frost laden 2016 vintage is fantastic tonight, rich, textural and so vibrant with great depth at the core, racy citrusy acids and the perfect amount of attractive flinty reduction. Great bottle.

Glass: Zalto Bordeaux Popped and poured, drunk over two days. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense youthful-developing nose. Some pear, fresh apple, finest oak and toasting flavours, some reductive notes, herbs and spices. Elegant and fine. Bone dry, 13% abv very well integrated. Medium+, juicy acidity. Fine tannin that gives the wine a good grip. Very elegant and lean. Beautiful balance and texture, dense with a nice tension and grip. Fine, fresh pear and apple. Very long and fruity finish. Needs certain temperature and air. Not yet at its full peak, but already very good! 93-94+

Absolutely lovely sesame reduction, mineral, driven, white fruit, so balanced with superb acidity even in this vintage. Lighter version of d'Auvenay if you like the style. 93-94

The great Bernard Boison Vadot bottlings (particularly Genevrières), which now all have some age, remind me of a hypothetical combination between Coche and Raveneau. Obviously in the best of ways. Papa Coche flinty reduction with the deep waxy yellow fruit of Raveneau along with the textural magnificence, density and depth of both Domaines. This 2016 is particularly impressive in that it’s a vintage I generally don’t care for in whites, but those in the upper echelon have started integrate really well at this point in time, far less awkward and disjointed as many on release. 2016 BV Chevalières is rich, toasty and intensely flavored with extremely impressive depth, texture and absolutely electric energy. Excellent.

Boisson-Vadot Tasting plus X (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Zalto Burgundy Beautiful golden color. Nice, elegant nose with some fine reduction and fine oak. On the palate warm, fine fruit, lots of crushed stones and rock flour. Beautiful tension and pressure. Great texture and structure. Lots of extract, beautiful animating acidity. 93+

Tasting portion. This producer has been gaining traction but wasn't a fan of this. Slightly heavy and laboured showing, spritzy nose, palate was unbalanced with a lack of acidity. Off-bottle? The curse of 16 whites striking again?

René Engel: Leaner than I remembered, showing a lot of acidity despite the light reduction on the second day, decent white fruit. 92-93

Reductive matchstick, balanced oak, sharp acidic focus. Tart lemon in the background. Delicious with smoked pork.
