  • Deep ruby. Plenty dark berry fruits, some redcurrant too. Fine acidity. Smooth tannins. Very pleasant. Not over exciting though. Maybe needed more air, this was a last minute replacement.

  • Pink rim, bright ruby red center. Bright redcurrant, white flowers, and minerality. Despite 17 years of age, wine was pure, restraint, and youthful, and tertiary aromas like manure and chocolate only just starting to show. Long silky finish.

We paired with a bottle of 2005 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers. The Chevillon was much more advanced in development stage. Both outstanding.

  • Significant sediment settled on the bottle, dark ruby color with less bricking than expected; limited aromatics, some muskiness; medium bodied, high acid not adequately balanced with fruit, lacks persistence; finish is short. Consistent with my previous bottle. 85

  • Definitely not an uninteresting wine but a little tart. The Bouquet comes with some thyme, nutmeg and vanilla as well as dark cherries. The palate is quite demanding with slightly coarse tannins and tart acidity. Overall slightly off balance and missing some Charme. I’m not sure if further bottle age will smooth those edges to merit a higher score.

  • A tasty wine from it's opening. Nice streak of acidity though not too much for me. Nice flavors. Went perfectly with smoked pork loin with a little bbq sauce. A nice wine.

  • Beautiful nose of red and black fruit (strawberry, raspberry, and black berry). Quite lively tannins still for its age! But nice and smooth. Drinks extremely well now, and I think could last another 3-4 years. A great Burgundy!

  • Light ruby with minimal bricking; nose is moderately aromatic, ripe red fruit, a bit roasted, a bit of heat, hollows out a bit toward the end of the nose; palate is light bodied, medium acidity, some primary red fruit, no secondary complexity at this point; finish is short and simple. This wine has the dubious distinction of being the lowest rated wine in my cellar. I agree that it's unremarkable, quite simple, still very primary, and ultimately too pricey for its quality even for red burgundy (it seems like bourgogne quality). Unclear whether this will improve, but I'll give it a chance since I have many bottles. 84
1 hour air: The acidity is more prominent on the palate, still overall primary and simple but unclear whether there is enough underlying stuffing to age. The nose has less overripe fruit now and actually is heading more towards some funk, though the palate is still all about fruit. Drinkable with food, but I really have no idea what direction this will head in. Overall good now, but may improve a bit with a few more years. 85

  • Nose a bit muted and then opens to be a bit over extracted fruit. On taste dense tannins and flavours which give a bit of an unbalanced palate. Good finish promises the wine will be fine once it comes together. Not ready but I am not sure what kind of wine it will be when it is ready. Not a delicate Burgundy but a bit extracted.

  • Note is several weeks old, but this has been bugging me since I tried it and need to get it off my chest. Purchased for $100 at a high end NJ restaurant with a great Burgundy selection and even greater prices, as you can see.

Nose was immediately full of underbrush, a dense thicket in fact. I wondered if it was reduced, but I am not confident in that assessment. In any event, it masked fruit, and other elements as well. I thought it might be a strange expression of being corked, but the underlying wine seemed sound, at least to the degree possible once you cleared the nose. I wrestled with sending it back, which in hindsight I wish I had, but after a few questions my party went back and finished the bottle with appetizers.

Two possibilities present: it was flawed and I failed to act, or it just wasn't very good, especially in view of the producer and vintage. Live and learn. I'm anxious to see what others have experienced after posting.

Update: after checking the other reviews, I'm going to amend my opinion and say this is a wine, like Chateau Nuit San Wagga Wagga, with a bouquet like an aborigine's armpit. Disgraceful.

Update: after reading the professional reviews, I'm going to amend my opinion and say it was a bad bottle.

Update: at this point it doesn't really matter. I'd avoid this wine in favor of a lot of other more humble '05's that are drinking beautifully now. This isn't a vintage where one needs to court controversy-the wines are generally freakin' great.

  • Better than prior bottles, perhaps this needs even more time. Shows decent cut and length, medium body with sour cherry fruit, some minerality, slightly smoky.

  • Unremarkable! Not bad or flawed just simple with no real character.

  • This is a fine if somewhat cookie cutter Burgundy. I imagine the winemaker has done what s/he can with this fruit/property. Still tannic, but also good earthy/plummy fruit. I disagree that this is a 79, which to me indicates a wine that is deficient in some way, which this is not. The worst I think you could say is that it is kind of boring and not worth the price tag, even for Burgundy.

  • This nose seems a touch on the tight side, but more than enough fruit to it to make it smell quite attractive for all its brooding darkness. Indeed, the fruit is distinctly enjoyable and, together with the pronounced stony character of the nose, this smells remarkably complex and positively charged with interest. This is proper Burgundy. One thing you cannot deny about the palate is that it is pretty tannic. However, there are delicious layers of ripe, dark fruit and a lively amount of acid which makes it seem charged with vivacious energy and, in its bold style, it is rather well balanced. It has a solid persistence to its flavours which don’t lack dimension and, especially if you like a bit of rigour, there is more than enough gratification to be extracted from this. Hmmm… ‘extracted’, yes it is a bit. I don’t think this has pretensions above its modest origins, but as I said pleasure can exist at many levels and I’m happy to drink this. If I were being extremely critical I could venture that the alcohol level is very slightly too high, but I feel that is the character of the vintage showing. All in all this is good Burgundy.
