Another Year, Another Napa (aka Winter in Wineland IV); 1/5/2020-1/11/2020 (Napa/Sonoma California): First time we've had an old one of these although have heard a lot about them. This was very nice. Still going well although I'd say probably right in drinking window. Towards the end of the night it was starting to fade just a bit. Dark fruits still there, but also more of the secondary cigar and forest floor notes. Enjoyable.

Pristine bottle- almost looked counterfeit except that at the price point I paid a few years ago, the hoodlum would have lost money... Great fill, label perfect. Beautiful color- no bricking. First scent on the nose had a slight bit dust (blew off) so no fake... Palate was young- softening but still had the sour, tight, slightly under-ripe Mayacamas signature. Dominated by sour cherry and leather with some hints of smoke. Would have benefitted from longer decant. Overall, very decent but the flavor profile was not overly compelling.

Drank with Mike, Lynne, Lisa, Britt and Chris for Lisa and Britt's birthday progressive appetizer dinner. Nose was a little closed, opened up after a few minutes. Did not decant or wait. Tart cherry preserve on the nose. Still some acidity. Clean short finish, no tannins left. Very smooth and plesant. Paired with pork ribs, cream potatoes and bacon maple brussel sprouts. Went very well with the sprouts.

Sweet spice and sweet beet juice on the nose. Pomegranate and black cherry emerge with some swirling as do light nutmeg and appealing mildew notes on the back of the nose. Fresh red cherry on the palate with must notes and well balanced acidity. Incredibly fresh bottle given the age of this wine. Served with roasted rack of lamb with caramelized porcini. Bottle from winery cellar. 92+

Visiting Napa (Feb 13th - 17th); 2/13/2014-2/17/2014 (Napa, CA): Nose: Blackberry, Currant and Juniper. Eucalyptus and slight mint tea notes. Palate: Light/Medium bodied and extremely silky. Still retaining some ripe fruit, but tannins are long gone here. Blackberry, Cherry preserves and a nice pommegranate note. Good acidity and balance. Finish: moderate, but delivers cranberry and red currant with some mineral notes.

Wine level just above the shoulder - cork in very good condition; decanted and showing considerable dusty sediment and a portion adhering to the inside of the bottle - wine clean; extremely dark red mahogany in colour; on swirling it was evident that the wine has a fairly full body; the bouquet starts out with a strong whiff of cedar, then follows with intense crushed blackberry fruit - strong black coffee - then the cedar comes back in more mellow fashion; glides over the palate on entry; extremely full bodied; huge dose of sweet black currant fruit - some blackberry preserves; excellent structure - superb acidity; there remain some ripe tannins under the fruit, but they are not aggressive; luscious styled wine, which extends through to a lingering finish of fruit - firm yet shows some elegance, too. My feeling is that the wine still has plenty going for it to age extremely well for many years - based on the fruit level and the structure. Still have 6 bottles remaining. Label indicates an alcohol level of 12 1/2 %.

Over the hill, thin and uninspiring. Perhaps a poorly stored bottle, hard to say but not worth pursuing

THE FIRST SUPPER – Dinner with Robert Parker; 5/17/2005-5/18/2005 (Corks Restaurant, Baltimore Maryland): Darker black to purple in color the bouquet was faint and non descriptive. Very little secondary flavors but some dusty tannins & tasting almost earthy. Tannins were still keeping this one together, I had higher hopes for this vintage.
