  • I can't remember if I bought this from B-21 or Costco but I do remember paying some ridiculous price (under $40 USD). Regardless, terrific entry-level St. Estèphe, the 2nd wine of Ch. Montrose and to be frank a much better deal than the grand vin considering the outstanding quality and drinking experience vs the enormous price delta between the two. I opened this on Saturday night and found it was wound pretty tight, closed off nose, palate everything so I pulled out the vacu-vin it and put into the fridge. On Sunday all that shifted and what presented itself was a rich, captivating wine that's dark & brooding in the glass with a pronounced bouquet and velvety mouthfeel. Loads of red/dark red/purple fruit mixed with herbs and notes of earth & tobacco. Tannins already nicely integrated; Finish lingers for 30-40 seconds. This is still young and can easily age another 3-5 years if properly stored. I know this is a 2nd wine but with a few more years of age I'd wager in a blind test it wouldn't drink like it.

92 points - very good wine with potential to add another 1-2 points

would I buy again - yes, excellent value at its price point ($40-$50 USD); outperforms much of its competition

  • Chateau Montrose Tasting (Bentley Bar & Restaurant, Sydney): Plums, sweet spice, polished oak, a little red berry and blackcurrant underpin, touch of tomato leaf, cream, blackcurrant gains ascendancy on the nose with time. Juicy, fleshy, slightly jubey plum fruits, integrated woody tannin offer a textured burr. Simple(ish) but nice.

  • All toasty oak on night one and not much else, reminding me why I don't often drink young Bordeaux. Replaced the cork in the nearly full bottle and checked in on a small glass the following afternoon. Now this is cooking. Lush, forward fruit has come to the fore, pushing the oak into the background. Age will be the best thing for this, but a long decant should make it approachable enough now. While second wines from Bordeaux can sometimes disappoint, Dame de Montrose does not.

  • Great wine where the red fruit take the lead. Lovely balance with a appealing sweet note in the finish. Too young but already lovely.

  • Drank from 0,375l. Had better bottles of this one. I think it's a little bit closed, because there are bitter notes at the end and the palate does not deliver very much fruit. Will wait at least 2-3 years before popping the next cork...89-90

  • Oh wow, this is a very good second wine. Rich, but not heavy. So classic. Not detecting alc. Earthy, but with fruit purity that can hang with a lot of grand vin near by. So balance. This is baby Montrose.

  • incredibly fragrant upon pulling the cork

lighter bodied+higher acid elegant style. light on the savory (particularly for St. Estephe and Montrose), but the fruit (while rich) is textured and vibrant.

no hint of "dessert" new oak=up my alley and unsure why some notes describe this as "modern." perhaps it's a bit juicy and lacking overt rusticity.

drinking well and really delicious on pnp for a young one.

  • Young and sexy, this is a rich wine cradling juiciness and seriousness simultaneously. It’s still in it’s grapy stage but it’s really fun to drink and a great value and treat from the terroir of the great montrose. I think it needs 3 years to be raised into a more serious wine from this juicy state or can be enjoyed now with a 90 minute open rest. Drink or HOLD

  • Quite tight when opened, as to be expected. Given a two hour decant and started to show a little better, but its mostly structure and tannins. Worth waiting a few years before checking in again.

  • Color: purple and burgundy.
Aromas of brioche, cherry, red currant, jammy
Palate: acidic, tannic, drying, red fruit and not jammy. All the different aspect of the wine is not jamming together yet. Way too young and not a young wine to drink. 2016 version of this wine was good to drink 3 years from vintage. This wine is different. If I drank this wine blind I would say it is a bad wine but knowing its pedigree I will give it a benefit of the doubt.

  • On the modern side, and clearly very young, but certainly enjoyable.
Very juicy deep black fruit with dark earthy notes. Big wine with lots of structure.

  • Met my expectations. Very youthful and well balanced, good depth of ripe cherry like fruit. Makes me consider buying the first wine. Much more enjoyable than the Pagodes. BTW, my highest rated wine is the '09 Chateau Montrose.

  • -- double decanted approx. 1.25 hrs. before tasting --
-- tasted blind over approx. 20 min. --

This started-off fairly simple, purple-fruited, and oaky. Gained some complexity and earthy tones in the glass. Really needs some time in the cellar to turn into something interesting, and I have no doubt it will get there. HOLD.

  • Comparative tasting with some of my other 2019 futures namely Pagodes de Cos and Siaurac.

Dark ruby with purple reflections - the darkest of the three. On the nose, upon opening, it isn't clean. With a bit of air, leather, ink, dark berries (blackberry predominantly) and smoke. On the palate, the attack is frank, tannic, with the aromas as found on the nose with added creosote and coffee - vanilla also makes a faint appearance. A good concentration and length. Of the three tasted, it is currently the most interesting. I'd give it another 5 years to open and then it should shine. Currently the most interesting of the three, but then Pagodes tends to reach a wonderful balance with a certain age and has the most precise fruit. Time will tell. 89 for pleasure today with a potential to reach 91 or so.

In my memory, I preferred the 2016 upon release. Time will tell which is ultimately better.

    -

  • Infanticide! Comments are meaningless now. I regret that opened the wine. 2019 is a great year. I think I'll try again in 2-5 years.

  • Dark red, this was well made with nothing out of place but it lacks joie de vivre, best in 2-3 years time

  • Full bodied, blended traditional and modern elements. Beautiful from popping cork, but lacking weight and length until it gets some air. Even still just about any house in St Estephe would hope to have this as their first wine. Although definitely a second wine in terms of fruitier style. Once it works through its reductive phase at around 60-120m, boy is it bitter and difficult. Another few hours and we're back to possessing charm and beauty well beyond the modest price.

Have been going through 2019 <$50 USD second wines and Dame de Montrose is above most -- fresh, supple, and lively. And something extra but indescribable. No hard edges, if you account for decanting. Largely CS, so it's quite possible this 2nd wine includes their best CS as most all the Merlot was blended into their stellar first wine. It drinks that way, at least. Conservatively 92-93+

  • Red currant on the nose and palate. A touch of vanilla and mocha on day 1 but which was absent after 24 hours. Well balanced and long. Packs a punch at 14.5% but no heat; Carrie’s it well.

  • Ripe sweet, dark red berries surrounded by cedar, tobacco wrapper, spice and wet forest aromatics is at work on the nose. On the palate there is more than ample, soft, ripe, sweet, crisp, elegant, earthy red fruits with a spicy touch on the backend to offer loads of pleasure with just a year or two of cellaring. This is a top vintage for La Dame de Montrose for drinking until the Grand Vin has a chance to develop and mature. Drink from 2024-2040.
