On a third tasting, I love this wine. Perhaps this bottle is less oxidized than the other bottles I tried. Or perhaps my tastes have changed radically. Either way, I find the aromas of dried apricots, musk, dried ginger, and slivered almonds intoxicating. The rich flavor and oily mouthfeel is delightfully decadent. And the finish is immense.

Like the bottle I tasted 6 months ago, this bottle is quite mature (i.e., oxidized). Lots of butterscotch and hazelnut, along with thick tropical fruit. Good minerality. The finish is bitter, and alcohol is noticeable too. While this wine is far more interesting and complex than most white wines, I see little else to commend about it. More generally, I'm not convinced about the wisdom of aging any dry white wine for 10+ years.

Quoique...

This wine, or at least this bottle, was bronze in color and quite oxidized, with a strong sherry-like nuttiness and a butterscotch sweetness. I liked the wine (I like sherry). But I felt the mature aromas -- which my wife described below as "century eggs flavored with soy sauce" -- obscured varietal characteristics. I have two more bottles of this wine, and I'm curious to see whether they taste the same.

Blind Tasting While Watching the Cubs Win NLDS Game 1 (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): Served double blind to the tasting group, and almost everybody correctly identified this as Northern Rhone. Lots of tropical fruits with dried figs and slightly sweet spice, but also lots of dried floral notes. Very concentrated and powerful. Came across as much more mature vs the last bottle from this same case that was opened one year ago. Glad this was my last bottle.

A white of staggering proportion with loads of complex floral component supported by honeysuckle, rose water and citrusy finish. Unquestionably well worth the money and easily outclassed the Leeuwin Chard which came after it. Will continue to follow its progress in the coming years.

Dark golden color. Aromas of peach, dried apricot, mango, lemongrass and fresh ginger with a hint of toasted hazelnut. Ripe with hints of sweetness, but a great intensity and concentration that work well with savory food. Perhaps a little pronounced new oak character.

The Northern Rhone Dinner (Chave, Jaboulet, Chapoutier, Rostaing, Tardieu Laurent) (Patrick's House): Popped and poured, followed over about an hour. Light golden colour. On the nose, rose petals, mineral, tangerine, pepper and almond. As this warms, I'm catching quite a bit of heat. On the palate, rosewater, minerals and spice. The mouthfeel is very rich and oily. The acidity is far too low, making this kind of cloying without being sweet. The finish is long, but it is hot and bitter. This would have been better a few years ago. Serving this alongside the much fresher 2009 did not do it any favours.

Aromas of wood resin, nutmeg, egg custard and grilled papaya. Overly woody palate -- a good 30 sec before fruit comes in. Long length. Light texture, however noticeable alcohol (15.5%) and quite the burn on the finish. Likely past it, and more of a woody future ahead.

Ready to drink immediately. Not as beautifully golden or complex as the '06 Vernon from Vernay. Totally different in style being very oaked, which is kind of a weird thing to do to a Condrieu, IMHO. But the other half likes it, and it is clearly a good wine, just maybe not to everyone's tastes (or mine for that matter).

Golden coloured. Parfumed nose, flowers, blossoms, apricots and minerality. Some grapey aromas and rosewater. This wine is remarkable but has known better days when its aromas were fresher. In the mouth it full bodied with mouthcoating texture and medium+ acidity. Flavours are intense, complex and long. Boiled apricot, honey, flowers, white pepper and rosewater. Verges on cloying because of its heady parfumes despite the acidity. I think this wine has to be drunk a little younger. Remarkable nevertheless.

Better than a year ago in that it has mellowed (not quite so much lemon). Rich, golden color. Still lots of spring flowers, acacia, honeysuckle, etc. on the nose. Oily and full bodied on the palate with lemon, anise. Maybe some tropical fruit. Could use a bit more acidity.

Dinner at Jean-Paul and Isabelle's House (Sai Kung, Hong Kong): Yellow gold colour. Nose of acacia flowers and fresh grated lemon, honeysuckle and fresh peaches and apricots. Peppery palate with acacia honey and peach stones with a pleasant dry back end. Some length and resonance. Paired very well with fresh home made fois gras. A really nice fresh white wine with character.

Decanted half an hour served at 9C. Medium yellow. Very floral bouquet with gentle spice notes. Lovely attack with floral notes quickly being complemented by a wide palate of spice, flinty petrol notes and a long final. There is also a slight sense of residual sugar I'd not noticed before with this wine - more a sense of fullness than sugar per se, but very fitting. Lovely wine.

Nose : basket of perfectly ripe white fuits : peach, apricot, pear, mirabelle with a hint of quince. Light citrus fragrance (tangerine) give a welcome note of freshness and prevent any overfruitiness. In the mouth, the wine is perfectly dry, white fruit are overwhelming and very precisely defined. The wine keeps its purity and freshness. It's perfectly balanced. The finale is very long.
Tasted with rabbit terrine with red peppers. Good match.

Yes, had the huge floral component it should have on the nose, but the interesting thing was the huge, huge butterscotch on the finish. In addition, lots of anise and tons of white pepper on the oily palate. Interesting is the best word for it, better than the 2005.

Decanted 2 hours, served at 9C. Moderately dark yellow. Nose of white flowers, oak, apricots, flint and some petrol notes. On the palate this has a brisk attack with a wonderful tapestry of oak, minerality, citrus fruits and acidity evolving over a complex mid-palate and long drawn out final. Wonderful en apperitif but better still paired with noix St. Jacques. 50+5+12+17+8=92.

L'Evento Angelo Gaja (Parco dei Principi, Rome): Medium gold. Intense nose of oak, vanilla, toastiness, unripe fruit and minerals. On palate, big mouthful of new oak, lowish acidity, some oak tannins, alcohol seems high. Big, round wine that is not particularly long or complex -- but the oak gets in the way. Can't imagine that this will ever properly resolve. No rating.

Wonderful nose full of apricots and honeysuckle. The mouthfeel revealed surprisingly rich peach, fennel and a crunchy mineral frame. My minor complaint was a hint of bitterness on the finish, that was more noticeable when warmer. Overall, this wine delivers the typical Condrieu experience with its well balanced fruit and flower components. but falls a bit short in the finesse I was expecting from its reputation (and price.)
