I've had a few vintages of this cuveé now (and various others from the winery), all of which ranged from solid to excellent for my palate- this 2019 felt like a small step down from all the rest. I certainly know the power and extraction of their style is deliberate, and I sometimes really crave it, even with a general preference for old-world styles. This time, it was just a little too much; the alcohol and especially the oak seemed out of balance, with a pretty aggressive heat signature and so much noticeable oak that there was almost a bitter scent to it. Sure, the fruit itself was still really nice, really dark and deep without feeling needlessly jammy at all. The structure is there without getting in the way, and I wouldn't call it flabby. It's just a little aggressive. Thankfully, having it with a burger really helped bring it together, but it wasn't the "big but balanced" Mollydooker I was expecting given past experiences. It was enjoyeable in the end for sure, just felt goofy rather than rich/full.

Full bodied, thick, creamy but very smooth. Sweet, full of fresh berries, blueberry 70 plus raspberry 30, harmonious with soft woods. A little lactic. Excellent Aussie Shiraz for the price point.

Popped, poured and did the Mollydooker shake. Opened up nicely and as expected was deep purple in color with hints of blackberry, cherry, and candy apples. Biting tannins, but not off-putting at all. Not as bold as the Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz, but this was enjoyable. Drink over the next 5+.

Shaken. Light pour on day 1 and saved for day 2. Bright, deep garnet color with clear ruby edges, glass coating. Aromas of cassis & smoked plum, purple flowers, mulling spices and black tea. Intense and concentrated ripeness on the palate, favoring blue and blackberry fruit, with secondary notes of nutmeg and paprika spices with blue florals. Full-bodied and round, with enough acidity to give some contrast and plush round tannins. Finishes with warming notes of vanilla.

Was craving an Aussie Shiraz, grabbed this from my local BevMo since I have not had a Mollydooker in a long time.
TN from a PnP. Deep inky ruby black. Bold nose that punches you in the face. Blackberries, plums, coffee, vanilla, a bit of cream (!!), and unrestrained American oak spices. As the wine gets more air - the nose seems to settle down.
Full bodied, a lot of sweetness from the 16% alcohol, but the punch fails to make contact due to the lack of acidity. Palate of jammy blackberries, vanilla, plums, coffee, spices (dill, tarragon, thyme), black pepper, and black olives. Smooth tannins with just enough structure to save the flabby palate.
Long finish that reminds me of Jagermeister mixed with Folgers crystals, vanilla creamer, and pencil lead. There is a lingering dark milk chocolate, black currant, and herbal liquor taste that never lets go.
Part of me feels like I need a cigar to enjoy this wine. I know there is a huge segment of the population that will like this, but this is not my style. Should have grabbed the Penfolds Bin 28 instead.
Double Blind Wine Tasting. #3 of the day. Easy to guess. Big wine. Reddish purple color. Toned down modestly from most young Aussie Shiraz’s. Lots of sweetness and red fruit with big tannins and lots of alcohol.
Previously reviewed and rated at 92 about 12 months ago. This has smoothed considerably with another year on its side. Retaining it's power and velvety mouth feel, but now with a level of finesse which belies its price point significantly. Extremely enjoyable to the point the bottle seems too small. Up two points for mine to 94 (and it clearly has plenty left in the tank - I'd happily leave for another 1-4 years).

Enjoy this every time. Drank this hefty Boxer along side Falernia single vinyard Titon 2012 Syrah. What an informative display from these two expressions of Syrah. The aged, old world style Falernia Syrah was all rounded meat, smoke and dark fruit. The boxer was big and juicy, pepper notes muted when compared to the Elqui. The fruit was almost bright in texture in the same way a Beaujolais is next to the Chilean. First 2019 Boxer. enjoyable as always and informative alongside the older wine.

Did not like the wine tonight as much as recent tasting. That recent tasting finished with this wine after 2 whites, 2 medium bodied Pinot's and a Cabernet so understandably it shined because it was so big amidst that lineup. That said I still respect its showing despite starting with this tonight. Reducing my last score 2 points.

This was purchased as a nod to nostalgia as we used to enjoy Mollydooker as students / first year graduates many many years ago
Nose of confected raspberry, blue plum, a hint of pepper and vanilla
Palate fully tastes like raspberry jam - really uncanny, a little chocolate, pepper and coffee in the mix. The body is verging on syrupy but the 16% alcohol burns through the finish and scorches the throat - unbalanced and not that pleasant
The Boxer? Well I definitely felt I went a couple of round with this.

The most viscous wine of the night. Ripe blackberry fruit with a spiced finish that lingers for literally 30 seconds. On second tasting I get Welch's grape jelly and huckleberry jam. Rich and frankly hard to dislike. Worth finding given the price point.

Deep, dark, and purple. On the nose, was getting eucalyptus, and a huge ball of fruit. Followed through on the palate, as well with low acidity and low tannins. Not necessarily complex, even though there is a lot going on (if that makes sense). Not flawed, just not for me.

Mollydooker wines have generally not been quite the same since the divorce between Sarah and Sparky Marquis … and his subsequent departure as the winemaker in 2017. However, The Boxer remains a solid go-to Shiraz for grilled steaks. It remains bold with tastes of spiced plum, blackberry jam and cherry fruit. And of course it’s always fun to do the Mollydooker Shake before pouring this red for family and friends. Cheers 🍷 db

Juicy, ripe, fruit forward Shiraz as usual. Blackberry, currants, and blueberries. Some vanilla and a bit of chocolate. It picks up some spiciness after a while. This is always good, especially if you’re into this style. The ‘19 is the best vintage in a while.

I must have drunk a dozen bottles of this vintage in the last six months, and it seems to be getting better and better. Lots of vanilla and red fruit on the nose, I couldn't pick it as a shiraz. Milk chocolate on the palate, long, long finish, the fruit is so seductive that you don't notice the tannins. If this were a Napa red it would be between $50 and $100. This is awesome QPR if you like fruit forward reds that aren't confected.
I think 2019 is better than recent vintages. Delicious on its own or with lamb, steak, pizza, pork.
