Tile coloured, weak nose. On the palate vanilla, cassis, sweet tobacco notes, seasoned beef (according to my wife). Don't miss this one, however, don't keep it too long in the cellar.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #104; St. Estèphe (By BS): Beautiful bouquet with dark berries, vanilla and a touch of pleasant barnyard. On the palate red berries, some earth, bell pepper, laurel and other herbs and spices, firm acidity which is a bit aggressive and slightly sticky tannin. Fairly lean wine with some complexity. Also fairly elegant. There is enough bite for some more years of cellaring and I hope the acidity becomes a bit more friendly.

Good, solid, somewhat austere left bank Bordeaux. Dark notes of wet earth and pencil lead, good acid and tannic structure. Not much in the way of fruit or perfume. Softened a bit over time in the glass, but didn't gain much of interest. Overall, this was not an exciting wine and had no distinctive personality, but it was enjoyable and satisfying, a good accompaniment for the braised short ribs.

WSET Level 2 Class 1 (BCIT Downtown Campus, Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind. Clear, deep garnet. Nose is clean, with pronouced aromas of tobacco, dark red fruit, currant, cocoa. Palate is dry, with medium+ body, medium+ acid, and high tannins. Flavours of black currant, smoke, light oak, black olive. Good quality, and nowhere near ready to drink...

An elegant, medium intensity nose of roasted cherry, lead and cedar. Light to medium bodied, with plenty of fine tannin, medium acid, very mineral and a touch of bitterness. Classic claret, at or past its peak depending how you like it. Not worth the price at $25.

Tested on well-aired bottle, 3+ hrs. Attractive nose of spice, sour fruit notes, smoke, graphite, and flowers. In the mouth slightly watery on the attack with a roughly equal proportion of smoky mushrooms, minerals, and sour dark fruit (black currant maybe cassis, black cherry or black berry). 65% cab sauv, 20% merlot, 15% cab franc. Dry. Body medium, acid medium, tannin medium plus.

Clear, dark purple-violet, lightening at the rim. Restrained bouquet of licorice, wet stones, vanilla, creme de cassis. On the palate, firm but civilized tannins, medium bodied, seamless. Excellent now, needs more time. Held up fine after 48 hours under vacuum stopper.

Good dark red color. Nose is a bit closed or restrained. Reasonably forward fruit; however, the fruit falls short on the finish. Some balance between fruit and acids up front, but again, the middle and finish are not very structured. Soft. An OK wine offering non-complex flavors and drinking. Drink now with little rumination.

The oak overwhelmed the fruit terribly. Maybe it's just too young yet because it seems that there is potential here. Will try again in a couple of years.

Minor 2005 Bordeaux, Major Quality (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Dark color. Austere with bootblack tannin on the nose. Big, tannic structure. This really fits my expectations of a lesser St. Estephe. It will never be lush, and I doubt the fruit will last long enough to survive the amelioration of the tannin.

You can taste the potential of the fruit from the mouth feel, but while the colour is nice and dark there's not enough going on as far as power and complexity is concerned.

Supple and juicy. A lot of good fruits. The taste of luxurious oak is clear as well. Not bad, but not really great either. Might gain one or two points after ageing.

Smells like grass, leather, and earth. Fruit and integrated tannins on the palette. Not bad at all, but not getting any better

A good Bordeaux tasting very well at this early date. Whets the whistle for the more expensive and complex 2005s to follow.

We recently tried some St. Estèphe wines and found we liked them. This one was not bad but not on the top either.
