Low rainfall, 100 yr old vines planted far apart. Sandy soil with some rocks. Pre-phylloxera (phylloxera cannot live in the sand). Biodynamic vineyard. Fermentation And maceration 3 weeks in concrete tanks. New French oak for MLF and 16 months aging. No filtration. Nose very concentrated red and black plum, cherry, spice, toast and chocolate. Full body, high acidity, and high tannins. This is a bold Toro that will last a long time. Brush your teeth.

This is my third and last wine from Matsu. Just 3 years old and I don't know what to say. Delicious, intriguing, complex with so many layers, both in terms of smell and taste. Aromas of herbs, oak ( finely the oak I like), earth, black fruits, blueberry, smoke( bacon?). All of them are 👍, but they fade when it comes to taste! I don't know... maybe I'm wrong or maybe I'm right, but people didn't mention 100 pounds of blueberry in taste. Also prune is here, herbs, cocoa ( strong like a hell) What else? Dusty texture, dark chocolate, spice from " the morning to the sunset" . Long, sweet finish. Tannins and acidity? How about if I describe them like in 10 years or more old wine. Soft, with full harmony with the taste. Powerful juices with perfect balance Ok, nice people have asked me what is the difference between all of 3 wines. The same producer, the same Toro AOC, one or two years between them and all are 100% Tinta de Toro grapes, 14.5 ABV El Picaro - 2 ( just 2- amazing) months of aging on its lees in concrete tank El Recio - selection of 90 years old grapes, 14 months in second use French and Eastern European oak barrels. El Viejo - selection of the best grapes, that come from very old vineyards of limited production and more than 100 years old. El Viejo - means...ok everyone knows this - the Old

Opaque black cherry in appearance - colour all the way through. A big bouquet: blackcurrants, stewed blackberry (with apple), some eucalyptus and a little bramble leaf and clove. Lovely plump fruits - powerful but pleasant. A dry, fruity mouthful: black fruits with velvety tannins, perhaps some blueberries, and slightly tarry liquorice. A chocolate edge. Definitely needs more time

Needed a day to open up and become flavourful. Really nice, silky, interesting. More of a food wine.
