Tuesday Dinner at Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong (The Conservatory, Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Splash decanted then drank over beautiful artisanal strong French cheese. Deep purple red semi-opaque colour. Beautiful nose, boysenberry and some oaky spicy classic Clare Valley Shiraz character. Quite rounded and well integrated on the palate. Satisfying, in a way that puts a nice calm smile on your face. This has lots of time on its side but is already ready to go. Bought on release as part of a quest to find 'the next Grange', it is finally entering its early drinking window. However, I would recommend a much longer decant, maybe double-decant overnight. 91 easy.

From a case bought on release as part of a 'Hunt for the Next Grange' research project that Runny and I did. 8-hour decant overnight. Very deep purple/ red fully opaque colour. Nose is almost totally muted and shut down…. almost earth to Mars? Very sour taste. I remain convinced that this will become a ‘new Grange’ sometime in its future but for now I would ignore and re-visit in 7-10 years’ time. 88 with 95pts upside.

This 2005 was consistent with earlier tasting notes back in May and previous last entry back in 2009 when this wine was only five years old. Now three times that age, it still presents the massive blackberry liqueur accented by full bodied blueberry, notes of kirsch, expresso and hints of cinnamon and clove spices.
Dark blackish garnet colored with full body and fine grained approachable well integrated tannins on the long lingering finish. Over the years since the earlier tasting, the berry fruits are starting to give way to a notes of raisin and hints of leather.

Slight bricking on the rim. Fabulous wine for the price. Perfectly balanced and some pepper, and vanilla on the pallet. Medium finish. Lots of sediment in the bottle, make sure you use a filter when decanting.

Whoa. Yes Whoa. I never would have thought this was a wine with a dozen years on it--great color with just the slightest evidence of bricking. Great fruit on the nose and a meatiness while subtle, still evident. On the palate, big fruit, mocha, and considerable depth. Whoa. Yes whoa. thedrunkencyclist.com

I'm not a big fan of Aussie Shiraz, but this was fun to drink last night. If it were not for the extracted, almost sweet finish, this could have been from Cote-Rotie. Surprised by how much herbal greenness is on the nose.

Still a big wine. Wish I knew where and when I got it. Popped and poured. Took about 10-20 minutes to open. Cherries, leather, cassis. 15%. Typical of Shiraz, but finesses and not hot. Great with Ginger-mandarin marinated Tri-tip steaks (flap steak from Costco). Also with Trader Joes 72% dark chocolate.

This is my third bottle of this wine (last bottle early 2012) and probably my least favorite showing. It has settled down a good bit with no heat, a STELLAR mouth feel with huge bombastic texture. It has solid core of fruit with a dark filling palate with notes of cassis and dark plum, chocolate and licorice poking through. So what, then, was the downside? The oak treatment. It was there and distracting and overpowered the fruit a bit. It seems while everything else has mellowed with the wine the oak has yet to follow suit. If the oak settles, this will by a stunning and complex example of Australian bombast. If it doesn't, it will become the stereotype. Only time will tell. 90?

Black spiced plums and black currants with incense nuances and lots of sandalwood. Actually quite befitting of its oracle name as I can actually imagine drinking this in a smoke filled room talking to a fortune teller with heavy perfume that is smoking hand rolled fresh tobacco leaved cigarette and eating some bacon rolls at the same time. Has a smooth fruited ending and actually quite well balanced.

Big obnoxious, round, brambleberry. Delicious. Hedonism in a glass. Need to be in the mood for this wine. Decanted and followed, this wine provided a hot firm experience (....) that was not pleasant, but transformed into a velvety crescendo finish of > 45 seconds.

A blockbuster of a wine! Pure cassis nectar with waves of chocolate, vanilla essence and pure Ferrari engine power on the nose. Full bodied, heavily extracted concentrate on the palate, with good acidity and still raw tannin - another 10 years in the bottle should see this mellow down. Still very much developing, with wafts of meat and American oak over-taking the kirsch liqueur aromas after 90 minutes in the glass. The finish goes on and on and on. Wonderful stuff!

White Asparagus Dinner at Greg & Sayo's. (Their Place, Hong Kong): Somewhat hastily popped and briefly decanted. Black totally opaque colour. Nose is deep monolithic blackberry and oak but all very pure. Palate is very deep rich blueberry and american oak, coffee grounds, tight black cherry that's not yet ripe. Too closed and young to sense much finish. It hasn't moved much since my June 2009 note when I said "don't revisit for 3 years". Not scored because it was a bit unfair for it to follow two properly-decanted and fully open wines....the 1985 L'Evangile and the 1991 Ch Musar.

Decanted 2 hours. Vanilla and cream nose with dark fruit, on the palate its so big and strong of sweet dark fruit, blackberry, cream, pepper and spice with a little leather. Great acidity and balance, long lingering finish. When I drink these kind of wines I always start saying "oh another Aussie fruit bomb" but a few sips later, it's so good!!! But definitely a style that old world fans would not enjoy. Although it's fantastic, considering the sweetness, I couldn't drink it all night, it's like a dessert in itself.

15 % Acl....Popped and poured..Nose: Vanilla, plum and spice just jump out of the glass. Amazing aromatics.. Palate: Again, vanilla along with dark fruit and spice dominate..Somewhat jammy but well balanced with good acidity..Nice long finish to this wine. This is a winner however, its still young and could become a 95 plus point wine in 2-4 years..I recently ordered a case (6) and will be storing it for the long haul...Great wine from a terrific winemaker..Cheers!!!

We knew this was going to be infanticide but Runny and I couldn't help ourselves. Very deep red colour but no translucency. Classic nose for a top class very young Australian Shiraz : restrained,vanilla-dominated, not giving much away at this stage. Lovely primary sensations on the palate: sweet, caramel and vanilla. No secondary depth yet. Good structure. Very primary and unresolved but harmonious and very classy. Great length. Definite "in your head" characteristics starting to show. Needs 5 more years in the bottle at least, and probably 10 years. But there's no doubting that this wine could evolve to become a blockbuster. This has the potential to rival Hill of Grace, if not Grange, but it will require a lot of patience.
