At 23 years old now and a year (97) that was a very wet year, my expectations were low. Had Francois Mitjavile worked his magic in this difficult year? well I found the nose a bit "damp, but green leafy", smell of forest floor and past its best. Drank from a riedel sommelier bordeaux glass (sorry zalto) yet colour still holding up. Notes of cigar box and hits of liquorice as well as that forest floor again. I am glad that its my only bottle

I found this dull (I agree - not a patch on the Tertre Roteboeuf 97) until this bottle, which was really singing. How can a 97 be a sleeper...? Easily, actually - I am beginning to think that this a bit of a characteristic of several wines of the vintage. Which is a bit of a shame because I am sure that most have been drunk....

Firm fine coarsed tannins in the opening. Some cherries and blackcurrant with chocolate. Ok wine, but nothing to be excited about. A bit short and lacks the Bordeaux elegance.

Drunk with veal parmegan: Nose of heavy banana bread notes---very pleasant. Notes of sweet ripe cherries, plums, a hint of banana and/or banana bread, and a bit of dark, over-ripe blackberries. A medium-length finish, with plenty of subtle fruit to enjoy. No real bitterness or other hint of unpleasant tannic structure. A beautifully mature wine that still has some age left.

Color is more coffee like than you would like, nose was overtly oaky and very little else. On the palate, this wine seemed past its prime, fruit is gone, leaving oak, some tobacco and tea flavours and a very short finish. suspect either this one was heat damaged or it is past its prime. Cork was fine.

Tasted after the 1996. A bit leafy, green, again a bit of incense on the nose. Fresh, not very generous, thin. Drying finish. Drink up. 86-88

Definitely going down the slope, but gently. Was never spectacular, but excellent for the vintage. Whereas the Tertre Roteboeuf....!!!!
