Rhone dinner: something weird happening here. Off-putting sour/lactic note marred whatever there was to be enjoyed. Seemed overly polished and modern as well (not saying it was modern, but came across as such).

From magnum with turkey xmas dinner. Young colour, ruby red. Nose very cote rotie and traditional. Plenty of leather and liqourice and smoky fruit. Nicely mature with good balance between fruit and seciondary development. Just right now and went very well with the turkey.

From bottle top it honked strawberry jam. That's familiar with young-yet-too-old, over-ripe, low-acid, low-structure, simple; so I tasted rather than decanted. Round indeed, but potentially adequate refreshment showed fleetingly in finish. Therefore didn't decant, and kept bottle cool; to prevent further loss of flavour-definition from oxidation and to provide a chance to feel any remaining, refreshing, interesting texture. On drinking an hour later it had (rather freakily) darkened, deepened and freshened. Closer to blackcurrant now! A little grey earth. Balsamic just beginning. Plush and refreshing: really easy drinking. Whilst that gentle material could be called loose, I'd prefer to call it interestingly, agreeably wragged at this very mature stage. Overall, so different to the aromatic, defined, detailed, complex '97. Not as exciting as that, but a very pleasing, impressive drink. 91 to 93. 91. I'd drink up within the next 2.5 years.

Farewell, Peter (New Rochelle, NY): This seemed a bit off. Milky and monolithic with overripe slightly sour fruit. Must be a flawed bottle.

bright fruit and lightly smoked earth on the nose; delicious fruit and spice on the palate; medium long finish; superb with grilled meat

Still youthful and vibrant. Great garrigue and herbs on the nose, with blackberries and smoked fat on the palate. Funky and delicious.

Beautiful funky nose to start, but taste failed to follow through

2007 France Trip - Vernay, Levet, Clusel-Roch, Jasmin (Northern Rhone): Big aromatics of savory raspberries, bacon fat, smoke, earth, sous bois, violets, and soy. Great purity of fruit. A bit tart/acidic on the finish for me. Very good.
