TWS North London; Volvanic Wines at Must & Lees (Must & Lees, N1): Smoky. Almost sherrified. Website says skin contact, and you can get that. Pretty funky nose; really long. Grew on me as the evening progressed. I wouldn't want to drink half a bottle of it, but a tasting format suited it, I think - it's pretty impactful. Unusual in a marmite-y sort of way, albeit judging by the general reception that this got that analogy is perhaps harsh on marmite.

Volcanic Wines of North London (Must & Lees): I started out really disliking this wine, with its slightly farty reduced nose and natty, cidery stylings... but eventually grew to find it pretty appealing (especially once the nose had settled down). Lean and saline, with mouthwatering (and puckering!) green apple and a hint of tequila. Juicy on the finish, with more apple. I don't think I'd buy this, and if I had it again I'd try to decant it, but I did end up respecting it.

Volcanic Wines (Must and Lees, N1): A most peculiar sulphuric nose the like of which I have never encountered and immediately off-putting. With time it does mostly disappear but by then the damage is perhaps done. It is better on the palate, with olives and lime, more like a red in some facets. It grows on you, good sharpness and acidity, quite pleasant actually. But you are stuck with the nose....

TWS North London - Volcanic Wines (Must & Lees, N1): Smoky, saline and a touch reductive. Maybe slightly oxidative too: it's rather closed and introvert, limey and herbal nose. Dry and textural on the middle weight palate, it's more mineral than fruit-led, a bit stony and chewy. Likely to be one of those wines better suited to contemplation over a glass or two rather than a 50ml sample at a busy tasting.

Saline, not fruity. Clean as you could hope. Lightly Fino sherry-like. A little apple-y. Zestful.
