An exemplar of everything that makes Howell Mountain one of the most sought after places in Napa for wineries to get grapes to make Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Blacker color, greater concentration, higher acidity and tannin, richer fruit, and more ageworthy. But, if you want a fully caressing texture, you have to age it beyond 15 years old. A great buy back in 2004 for $27.

Consumed over two days note from day two. Nose: Medium plus expressiveness, dark fruit - black berry and cassis, smoke, spice, and vanilla. Palate: Medium-full bodied, low volume attack of dark fruit and earthiness - though it holds up from front to back. Finish: Medium plus length finish of dark fruit, tobacco, and earth with spicy hints. Drinking very nice right now, just lacks the stuffing to be truly outstanding.

Definitely not past it's prime. Opened about an hour prior to dinner. The nose was full of dark fruits, vanilla and a hint of smoke. The wine was full of licorice, plum, berries and an earthiness.

Opened 1 hour prior - consumed over 4 hours. Nose: Dark fruit - black berry and black currant with cassis and a hint of smoke. Palate: Full bodied with dark candied fruit - very thick. Finish: Long finish 20-30 seconds with both dark fruit and licorice.

Exactly what a well aged, mature Howell Mt cab should express. Hits all the notes well. Looking for more.

Dinner (roast beef and roast duck) at Foothills Cafe a Napa tradition. Dark purple, full bodied and strong. A few years will make this better.
