  • Viña Don Melchor's 2021 vintage is a deep-to-opaque ruby blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot, aged for 15 months in French oak barriques (68% new). Deep-to-opaque ruby in color, it is aromatically effusive of black currants, kirsch, licorice, exotic spices, violets, mint and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, fresh and with seamless alcohol (14.8%), it delivers flavors congruent with the nose, injecting a thread of iron. At this early stage, the plentiful oak and equally plentiful tannins have not fully integrated, dominating the mid-palate and lengthy finish. This terrific wine is a baby that will require some patience. If it fleshes out as anticipated, a higher score will be merited. Drink 2028-2051.

  • Raspberry, plum, rosemary, and white pepper (from the official tasting notes). There’s was also some burnt popcorn kernel. The nose is oaky and very youthful right now. The palate is amazing. Tannins are plush and the finish is long. My score is based on potential, but I truly believe it.

  • Tasted at Don Melchor vertical dinner with Enrique Tirado. 35th vintage of Don Melchor. So mineral compared to the 2020 - graphite and wet rocks. Quince, Eucalyptus, and black fruit. Long, textured, and complex on the palate. Terrific harmony and this will only improve with some age, but is a delight to drink now too.
