Slightly over the hill...baking spices, red liquorice, still some tannin, sour red fruits on the finish, with tobacco notes. Probably much better 5-10 years ago.

A better example than previously consumed some time before, and very spirited but showing its age - classic Barolo and showing what was called "Barolo tar," this is on the dry side.

Marcarini Barolo Brunate Dinner at Ciano: Moving this way, after drinking the older wines, it's weird how youthful aspects of this 30 year old Barolo are obvious now. Beautiful fruit here, a lovely floral nose, very alluring. Balanced and complex in the mouth, and the pungent and slightly herbal finish left a perfume that reminded me of the way the older wines feel. Very lovely wine.

The nose was quite big - this is a dark wine that at first comes across as foursquare. On the palate it is sweet and a bit simple. Fine but not better.

the color here is still very youthfull, dark and almost purple tinged. The nose starts out a bit tough with a decidely leathery, nutty base overwhich are laid spicy and savory, soil driven notes with a top note of espresso foam, seems very youthful though then turns distinctly beef boullion cube with particularly strong dehydrated vegetal notes, adds some incense, cigar ash and dried rose with time as well as a light nuance of menthol/licorice. Tougher in the mouth than the 78, minerally and riper though still transparent, finishes a bit short. Some obvious richness upfront with nie bright fruits through the mid-palate which tightens up with air before shutting down some on the finish which is crisp and long. This seems to need quite some time to reach it's peak but is an atypical bottle as others have shown significantly more evolved.

Marcarini Brunate Vertical Tasting (Ciano, 45 East 22nd st., New York, NY): he nose showed rustic red fruits, musk, crushed fall leaves and a hint of spice. On the palate, it was elegant and still lively with deep, fresh red fruits. This finish was medium-long with silky balance.

Acidity, beets, cherry, no nose. A few years past prime.
