  • My first 1991. Bought to try at auction based on great reviews on CT. Thought it would be fun! This is clearly classic Bordeaux and there is no doubt that the nose is very snobby super second, mature Pauillac and full of cedar and fresh tobacco. A heavenly nose but some trouble in the middle. A bit of wateriness that quickly gives way to a huge, dry, tannic package with a very very long finish. I suspect that's what is wowing the others here, but mine was hollow in the middle. All that remains is a seductive bouquet, stubborn acidity, and lively tannins. Shamefully, this bottle is clearly disjointed and never pieced back together. I have one more to try...DRINK_if you have this rarity.

  • This was a surprisingly good Beychevelle. Tasted the 1991 against the 2009. Decanted for just 15 mins. The colour of the ‘91 was still dark and there was plenty of fruit. Very enjoyable. Obviously, will not get better from here on, but keeping up well from a forgettable vintage. A real joy.

  • This was a library wine and gift on its (and our) 25th anniversary, held another four years. Our experience was entirely consistent with CHHCT18 in December 2018. Most important, don’t lose hope that it’s past its prime; it was ready now, maybe a bit mature, but fully enjoyed in 2020. It may also cellar (not handled, and properly stored) up to another year, but don’t let it go too long - it would be a shame to miss this one.

  • What a lovely wine. A bit thin, and at first the acid is more pronounced than the fruit; but (without decanting, and served at cellar temperature) after about 45 minutes it comes into balance and is wonderful. And at 12.5 you can have as much as you like throughout the meal.

  • Details: pop and pour and after 40mins the details fade so pay attention! Nose is a beautiful heady concentrated wild mushroom, truffle and earth mix, finesse only reserved for aged claret. The palette carries aged fruit still in its youth with a layered texture. This is aged claret...

  • Opened the second bottle of a series of six. The first one stroke us as a magnificent. You can completely ignore the year on that wine.

This one is just as good if not better. Every note is subtle, the aromas are delicious and the length even today is perfectly correct.

It deserved to be drank now. It remains a tight when chilly. Make sure you bring it to room temperature early enough to let it breath properly. Peaks after a bit over 1h.

  • A splendid effort in a poor vintage, a very deep colour, lots of fruit, elegant and forthcoming.
