This bottle of the ‘71 Oeno is a great example of an ancient Dom Pérignon. Limpid and perfect acidity. True to form, it’s not about yeast or bread; the fruit is now an austere shell of citrus. There was a very brief spray of tiny bubbles when pouring into the glass. You have to approach a champagne this old on its own terms because the resemblance to twentieth century champagne is minimal. I would not be sure tasting it blind that it was even champagne and I surely would not guess it was Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Much appreciated by the birthday crowd.

2008 disgorge. Deep but smooth palate here. Completely delicious, nothing wrong w this oeno as it certainly showed more character than more recently disgorged bottles

Regular dinner group (@ JvT): Focused acidity and minerals in the bouquet and on the palate. Enormously elegant, beautiful citrus acidity, some pleasant bitterness and a great length. Very impressive; what a freshness!

Brief note from blind tasting yesterday at a friends place. Nobody at the table could have guessed this champagne was this old. Released sinds 2006 this almost 50 years old champagne came across so vivid and in total harmony. Something you would love to drink every weekend but sadly is not possible. Almonds, a little zest great and pure acidity and lovely minerality. Nice and lingering finish.

Trios of Dom Perignon: The 71 Oeno continues to go from strength to strength. It's really stunning now, and is still improving. By a wide margin the best of the three 71's in this flight (original, Oeno, P3).

Excellent bottle, disgorged 2006. Despite medium gold color, the champagne was amazingly fresh. Modest sigh when pulling the cork, continuous spray of extremely tiny bubbles, slight prickle on the tongue. Quite a bit of yellow fruit, apricot and pear, and no post mature notes of coffee or mushroom. Lots to love, just lacking complexity for truly great. Held up well in the glass for several hours.

More towards the advanced end of the spectrum for a wine that has repeatedly showed as somewhat advanced vs other similarly aged oenos. If you have it, drink it.

Another fine showing for this old Oenothèque, disgorged in 2006. There's a resemblance to the very fine (standard) 1985 DP, although this particular bottle did not have the depth of the best examples of the younger vintage or of the very finest '71 Oenothèques. Splendid mousse for age, forming a perfect couronne of pinpoint bubbles. Gingery DP flavors, no coffee yet, terrific length. Will go on.

This was showing more age than I've typically noticed. Very good, liked very much by all. But I'm tempted to put these on higher rotation. Will revisit soon to check if the "age" was bottle specific.

Still singing, cannot really say its very fresh but it is more mature now with slight sherry note, still nutty with butterscotch. Overall fuller than before yet not overdone yet, now its time to consume this lovely champage.

A trio of Oeno. Drank the 69, 71, and 75 side by side. All three were fantastic. The 69 has always been my favorite, and this night was no exception. Simply stunning, The 71 has really gotten better, and had two of eight votes for wine of the flight. I think the 71 Oeno needs a bit more time in bottle, but it is improving. It also benefits more than most from extended time in the glass. The 75 is great, and continues to go from strength to strength. All in all, a terrific flight.

Drank the 71 DP along side the 71 Oeno. We've been doing this a lot lately, and it really shows how well stored original bottles outshine recent disgorgements. Both were great, both were in perfect shape. The 71 originals continue to shine, and lately the 71 Oeno's have been showing better than they did on release.

Obviously much more youthful than the original DP. This bottle released 2006; I purchased it 2 yrs ago. A few stray bubbles, color of a mere 20 yr old. Almost too young at first, but rapidly evolved in the glass. Glorious perfect secondary flavors of old fallen apples and pears. Texture of whole milk or more. Honeysuckle with time. Miraculously gets more vigorous after an hour or two.

A new year's eve treat ... One of several 1971 champagnes tasted. The best was certainly clos des goisses but this was a strong second. Far fresher than expected with a nose of lightly cooked apples. Just a light fizz. Great length. As it developed, more complex tastes of nuts.

Pretty nice nutty hazelnut nose with slight butterscotch and caramel toffee, nose a bit shy. Lush and full palate with signs of an ages champagne but only becoz next to the invincible 69. Very good indeed but not as breathtaking as the last.

Dom Perignon Dinner (2002,1996,2000 Rose,1971) (Man Wah Restaurant, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hong Kong): Served in wine glasses and paired with the Mandarin's super rich Cantonese fried rice with roast duck, matsutake mushroom and oyster sauce (except that the wine was so captivating that I hardly ate the food). Lightly honeyed gold colour. Nose is OMG....lovely almonds in three variations of toasted, fresh and something in between.... hints of oxidization/age but I mean "hints"...there is a beautiful mahogany grandparents' furniture finish to the nose that suggests age...but balanced by a contradictory brightness and freshness. Palate is intriguing and silence-inducing......some incense, very sharp light patchouli oil, a very pronounced and definitive sharpness....that precision shared by all the Dom Perignons drank tonight is also there again... but with amazing linearity....profound depths.....profound...but so light, understated and elegant.....aloof but accessible.......endless endurance in the glass.....this may be too understated for some people but it has me in reveries and took me to a very special place that only a handful of wines have ever taken me. Absolutely stunning........

Light golden color, nose initially still tight, but palate still fresh and amazing, full of hazelnuts, toast and yeast. The nose caught up after an hour, wow all the nuts and fresh citrus fruits! Amazing complexity and freshness for a 40 years white wine!

Not quite as scintillating as before but still at that amazing point where old crosses with fresh. We drank it too fast; i.e., too cold, because its true brilliance did not appear until it reached full room temperature and no bubbles were left.

Of course I was intensely curious to see what a 39 y/o Oenotheque (disgorged 2006) would taste like. Would it be dark, bubble-challenged and oxidized even if kept in Moet's icy cave all this time? Mais, non, monsieur. The color was light gold with no trace of brown. And there were multiple chains of pinpoint bubbles rising to the top of the flute, such as one might expect in a mere 20 year old. The bouquet was spectacular; the famous DP coffee clearly there but not overwhelming. A kaleidescope of aromas including dark chocolate, apricot and walnut. On the palate, amazingly lively and fresh with tremendous flavor authority and no hint of fatigue, madeira or sherry. Brilliant, thrilling champagne. Held very well in the glass over a two hour period. The wooden coffret included is also very impressive, gently cradling the bottle, with a clasp closure to ensure you do not drop the bottle on the floor and commit hara-kiri.

Black label also disgorged in '06. Much more floral and feminine than the '69. Lilacs, violets and perfumed. Was drowned out a bit by the previous wine and would have surely shown even better than it did had it been served alone. Excellent plus.
