Showing tertiary notes, definitely an aged wine. Finish is short, not much lingering beyond some initial fruit. Good fruit core through the mid-palate.

Seems to have reverted to my earlier impression from 2013: "Popped and poured with bread and cheese. I agree with winegr, this is an atypical zin- reminds me of some Italian wines- earth, minerals, stong tannins, exotic spices. It also seemed quite closed to me. This was my second bottle and continues to reveal relatively little." This time, however, the drying tannins were pretty imposing and unbalanced. I think the window my have passes on this. Apparently, I liked this better in 2015 when I rated it more highly. I have 2 left. Perhaps it will see better years.

Pale ruby orange in color in appearance with a watery rim. The nose is intensely perfumed with notes matured fruits, damp earth and some dried leather. The plate is medium-bodied, relatively dry but very smooth, relatively well balanced considering the copious amount of alcohol it contains. The flavor components include red and blue fruits, cola, peppery spice (or maybe heat from the alcohol?), dried flowers and wet loam. Overall, this wine tasted much more generous and much more integrated than when I last tried this back in 2011. But just like my previous experience, the middle palate and the finish is still pretty diluted (wimpy wine???) which is in my opinion, its downside. Although this wine is well into it's drinking window, I do think that this organically-grown old vine Zinfandel (from vines planted in the 1880s) still have some life in it at least for the short term as indicated by the still noticeable tannins present. Improved considerably in terms of its overall balance by the second day but still the alcohol is quite pronounced at 15.5%.

Based on my last tasting, I let this one lay down for a while (4 years). Happy I did so. Much better this time around. This continues to be a pretty massive wine. It has the earth, minerals, tannins and exotic spices that I experienced on the last go around, but this time the wine was much more open. Don't get me wrong, it was still a fairly punishing wine. But with much much more interest. The fruit is fading but I do not miss it from the last tasting as it had been held hostage by the wine's tannic structure in early tastes. Now the spices and earthy, meaty red tones came out from behind the curtain. I hope the next tasting will reveal a little more.

Dry cork broken in two. Initial tastings suggested oxidized, but improved over time in the decanter. Strong lean towards aromatics, not enough fruit for my tastes. Fading fast, though perhaps a bad bottle. Wimpy.

Young fruity phase has passed and it presents good complexity in the nose with dark fruit and spices in the nose decent softer tannins. As it ages, it is showing some prune flavors on the body and the alcohol is noticeable. I would drink up.

Beautiful Zin and very much classic Ravenswood! Decanted about a half hour before drinking. Dark ruby garnet color. Nose of cherries, plums, briar, earth and spice. Very structured with complex blue and red fruits balanced by licorice, black tea, and pepper. Fine-grained and well integrated tannin. Dare I say, "claret-like." Drinking wonderfully right now, so much I'd say no reason to wait, except I've known older bottles which suggest this will age out for over a decade more.

Epic bottle. This was great 93-94. Tasted more like a barolo again than a zin. Acidity, briar, earth, orange oil, fennel. Love it. Wish there was no bottle variation, but there clearly is.

This bottle was much better than the last. Dry, structured, tannic and complex. Again showing more citrus, fennel, blood orange and other notes more typical of barolo than CA zin. This bottle was great. Some meaningful variation between bottles.

My first bottle tht was slightly off. Lets hope its not a sign of things to come. Night one was very ripe and hot, but still some underlying interest. Seemed slightly off. Night 2 was much better with more of the fennel, orange oil, red fruit, and other things i loved in earlier bottles. I still have a bunch, so hope this was an off bottle.

Man ... my score is so much lower than others ... maybe the wine was in a 'dumb' phase as it was very mu ted in every aspect ... nothing stood out, like a $8 bottle of zin. A shame as we normally love what Ravenswood does.

This bottle was just great. From pop and pour drinking perfect, medium bodied, but dry and firm with licorice, exotic spice, minerals. Very elegant and complex. Great acidity. This is tough to peg as zin, because it is just superior to most zins. Love it, but nothing stereotypical here. Starts open, closes down a bit and then opens again night 2.

91-92+. This bottle seemed more subdued without the endless finish, but there was still a lot of complexity lurking and nice elegance and balance. Red fruit, blood orange, spices, fennel, and other goodness. Not sure this is getting better, but plenty of time left.

Very pale reddish color with an elegant spicy nose with a considerable amount to alcohol. The mouthfeel is very smooth and refined, medium weight at best with some spicy fruit. Somewhat weak towards the middle and not much happening towards the finish. A very refined but and somewhat lighter-bodied zin.

Needs some air to come into its own. This is a zin for nebbiolo lovers. This is like velour on the palate with acidty and tannins that are mouthcoating and make the finish linger for a really long time. This has dark red fruit, exotic spice, anise seed, some slight tart blood orange, and other barolo-like texture and goodness. This is elegant, sophisticated, and complex. Not entirely sure this is getting better however, but should live for at least 5 years yet. Very interesting stuff and very different from most zins.

The elegance, acidity, tannin, mouthfeel and finish are just excellent. Dark red fruit, spices, fennel, beautiful tart balancing acidity. Velour-like mouthfeel and lingering finish. Great, but not quite up to 1 or 2 prior bottles. 92+. Puts most zins to absolute shame. Night 2: Still excellent, maybe not quite like the end of first night.

Dark ruby wine with translucency around the edges of the glass; spiced aroma reminiscent of black pepper and sharp spices. Medium-bodied, smooth textured, with again the sharp notes of black pepper, cinnamon with some hints of raspberry & a touch of citrus towards the end. The wine finishes Long. Long, smooth finish that starts with a dry tang but mellows with air. A big Zin with complex flavors; tasted great with smoked turkey & stuffing but would stand up well with lots of other rich, bold flavors.

Like other bottles, what makes this unique is the elegance, the balance, the exotic spices, and the endless finish. Needs a bit of air to help it flesh out and the alcohol/heat settle a bit. Serve at proper temperature and decant it. Needs some air to round out and show the gorgeus balancing acidity which brings more complexity to the finish.

92-94. Wow. I'm not a fan of Zin generally, but this was elegant, complex, structured, textured, balanced and nuanced in a way that I am not used to with even relatively high end Zins. Starts with red fruits and real elegance. Lighter in color than some big pinots. Lots of exotic spices(nutmeg, indian spices, cinnamon, pepper). Then I get a bit of sweet orange rind or blood orange. With air it becomes a bit more candied and ripe, but balanced by a wave of secondary flavors, firm superfine tannins, and a finish that lasts a really long time and lingers on the palate. More tart blood orange oil with more air that brings a bit more tartness and balances out the ripeness nicely. Really intriguing, exotic and thought provoking stuff. I don't think Tanzer was too far off on this one. Really evolves in the glass and nice aromatics as well. Maybe I do like Zin.

This wine has it all . Big explosive fruits on the nose, with spice. The palate follows with gorgeous minerality, big fruit, and great tannin and acidity. This wine is high in alcohol, yet its not a thick fruit bomb. Its zingy and fresh. You can see through the wine in the glass and the balance is great. This wine will be at its best in 3-4 years, but its so good now.. the taninns are quite high but fruit not oak. It is great with lamburgers. This is a wonderful wine and should be at the price.
